Automotive Repair Question

This has been happening on my wifes Nissan but it can apply to all cars.

The battery terminals seem to need cleaning at least every 6 months. They get heavily corroded to the point the car will not start. I clean them well with a wire brush, put on the colored donuts to prevent corrision and smear the grease over the terminals. I have little trouble with my other cars. Could there be something else wrong with the car that could be causing this?

You might need to replace the cables. If it still does it, then it might be time for a new battery. But I'd start with the cables as they might be corroded too.

The battery is just a year old. i replaced one of the cable clamps recently.

Is there a reason you are saying to replace the cable or is it just a guess? I do not want to do it just to do it.

Nissans are probably the worst for terminal corrosion. The best thing you can do is to clean the terminals with every oil change. If the battery is bleeding any acid that will only make the problem worse.

If you could tell me what make, model and year it is I can look to see if there are any TSB's addressing your particular problem.

Also that corrosion will grow into the cables themselves and make it nearly impossible to keep the terminals clean.

I wouldn't really call it a guess...more process of elimination. More than likely the cable is corroding too. Corrosion eats its way down.

I'm no expert here since my wrenching days are from when engines could be worked on by the common man. But when a cable gets corrison started on it, it works it's way backwards into the insulation. Even if you clean it at the source the damage is already done and it will usually continue to come back due to the exposure to moisture. Replace the cable and all should be well.
