Perchoutofwater
National Service Bill to get Obama's signature. Based on what it says in this article, this is one of the few spending bills congress has come up with lately that I can half way support. I think many people that do not donate their time to charity, would if they ever got a taste of it. I haven't read the bill, so I'm not 100% of all the finer points but based on the article, it sounds like something pretty good, if congress is hell bent on spending money. Now if it makes any type of service compulsory then I would have a problem with it, but assuming it doesn't this may be the first bill that has been signed this year that I don't actually detest. CaP'N GRuNGe
This is actually a pretty nice idea: People 55 and older could earn $1,000 education awards by getting involved in public service. Those awards can be transferred to a child, grandchild or even someone they mentored. I'd imagine retired or semi-retired grandparents would love to do something like this for their grandkids. i_am_the_swammi
Also encourages kids to get involved by giving them $500 towards college if they complete a summer program. Of course, republicans are generally bashing it, saying government shouldn't be getting involved with how we run our communities. Republicans complain it is too costly and is an unnecessary intrusion by government into something Americans already do eagerly and in great numbers — helping their neighbors and communities. And the republicans would be correct for the most part. I and many others want smaller government, that pretty much does what government is supposed to do per the constitution. We don't see then need to spend the money the majority of the programs that the federal government spends money on. The only reason I'm somewhat behind this bill, is it is apparent that this congress and this administration are going to spend, spend, spend, so at least they are spending it on something somewhat deserving. Sox
I'm a conservative, but I rather like this bill. It's a win win in my opinion. You get volunteer work for communities, and reward (pay) them with credit towards college. This is one I like.
