Social security needs to be for emergencies and for people who really through no fault of their own are not able to take care of themselves such as the mental and to a lesser degree the physically handicapped. It should not be considered a retirement fund, it should be an emergency fund. It should be our goal that no able minded and able bodied American never have it. It should be a safety net nothing more. Like Ursa, I'm all for means testing, though I think I'd set threshold much lower than Ursa for those that are not eligible. Basically I'm of the opinion that anyone receiving government assistance should be on the brink of poverty and living as such.

Anyone using SS as their sole income WILL be in poverty, be assured of that. Still and all, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, why wouldn't I use that income first and my own savings last given the latter are inheritable whereas SS is not? This problem doesn't go away without a means test.
