Ursa Majoris
i agree with you, if your actions just affect YOUR life. but smoking affects not only the smoker, but others around him/her. This is precisely the liberal nanny creed you profess to hate so much.
Kid Cid
Whether you are a smoker or not, you have to be pretty damn snobby to think that the gubment should be dictating whether business/property owners can or cannot decide whether patrons can smoke on their premises. This is essentially the crux of the argument. Government overstepping it's bounds just to "save us" from ourselves. This smoking ban has been implemented in an extremely draconian fashion. Had any single government stepped up and said that for the public safety we are requiring eating/drinking establishments to be either smoking or non-smoking then an argument could be made on the state's behalf. This would have allowed the business owner to make a choice in how to run their business. It also would have allowed a private individual to make a choice about his or her behavior. HowboutthemCowboys
The next law they are pushing is that you can't smoke in your car Believe it or not, in Pa. you can't smoke in a company vehicle if there's more than 1 person in it EVEN IF BOTH AGREE TO SMOKE. yo mama
it is. the left wants more and more of my earnings to impose their agenda. yet they dont want to infringe on someone's right to smoke. bravo. Would you like a broader brush to paint with? I'm not sure the one you've got is quite big enough. The right wants your money just as much as the left, they just have different agendas. So don't get all sanctimonious with someone who knows better. Besides, the government has the explicit grant of authority to impose tax, people do not have a comparable and constitutionally mandated "right" to smoke. But that's not even the point. The point is that people who bemoan the "nanny" state the most loudly most often have their own preferences for when the government must regulate or restrict something. Thus, my double standard complaint. Rational people understand that a reasonable amount of government regulation is necessary, though where and to what degree is a matter upon which intelligent people can disagree. In contrast, people who bark about things in stark black and white, right or wrong absolutes are most often annoyingly hypocritical.
