tbimm
I don't see how that can work. I get what you are trying to say but shaft is in the way. Perhaps I am doing this all wrong. I slide the seal on the shaft and then inserted it into the transmission and then bolted the shaft at the universal. Then I attempted to knock the seal in place. Should I have put the seal on before I slide the shaft in? Yup. Thats where your problem is. Take the shaft back out. Install the seal then put the shaft back in. If you had installed that seal with the driveshaft in place successfully that would probably be the first time it was ever done. You will need something deep enough to not bottom out on the output shaft of the transmission. As I said I usually use a socket from a 3/4 drive set as they tend to be deeper sockets than the 1/2 drives are.

And do you at least buy her a drink first?
westvirginia
Tbimmer is right on the money. Use a 1/2" impact socket if you don't have any 3/4" drive stuff
tbimm
it is apparently just just pressed onto the shaft of the ball joint, I transferred it to the new ball joints when I had them pressed in. Make sure you get this thing off and if your putting new ones on, toss the old one. If you have auto repair questions try to check the procedures in your repair manual. I just read back through this whole thread. You have the UJoint cap seals confused with the rear transmission seal which is what FBJ is talking about. I wasn't awake yet when I first read the post hence the emoticon. Interesting place for your 1st post there buddy.

Footballjoe
Finally got it together. It rained numerous times when I had planned on doing it. The auto parts store near me did not have them in stock. The other store I went to gave me the wrong one. And I screwed another one up. Besides that everything went smooth. I did not have a large socet so I used a piece of galv pipe but it was a little to small in diameter. I ended up buying an 1 1/2 galv coupling since it was very thick on the ends. I put a plug in it to give me something to hit on. Its the perfect tool for the job. I think it took 3 hits and it was in all the way. No leaks. I still have trouble with the tranny though. I cannot get up over 40. It sounding like its slipping. Does this model have a belt? I can go in reverse. I can get to the dump and Garden Center that I need the truck for but it would be nice to take it elsewhere. Any idea's what the problem is? Appreciate the help so far. Footballjoe
Is it low on fluid? Not any longer. It was leaking badly from the seal. I just filled it but it was run with very low fluid a while back. I think it may be shot but just wondering if there could something else to check with replacing the tranny. If it's slipping & the fluid level is good, then you probably have an internal transmission issue.

westvirginia
On an '88 it's probably an early 700R4. There is no belt or anything in there, and the early ones had valve-body problems. The good news is that they're relatively cheap to get rebuilt in this day and age, and with a rebuild comes the better, newer designed valve body. westvirginia
What's considered cheap? Besides me. RELATIVELY cheap. Instead of $2500 or so, you might get it done for $600-$800. If the rest of the truck is still good, it's certainly worth checking it out. Don't go to a chain. Find a local trans specialist. Heck, it might just be a torque converter @ $300 or so. Can't really tell with the info I have.

It was rebuilt about 5 years ago and doesn't have much milage on it. it also had a paint job done about the same time. needs a new bench seat real bad but I can live with that. Its mostly a run to the dump and Garden Center truck but it wouldbe nice to have it running right. Just put on a new rad about a year ago and last month an alt and battery. All in all it ain't a bad truck for its use.

And if the truck is otherwise good, I'd at least take it to a trans specialist or two to get a quote.

westvirginia
Mostly the foam. Then see if you can find a seat at a junkyard. Seriously man, a good running truck, no matter how ugly/old, is one of my finer joys in life.
