Ursa Majoris
Cool and perhaps the most likely future near-space conveyance. Certainly more economical than a shuttle.
jetsfan
Dumbest idea EVAH! There is no way for the system to survive the changing atmosphere based on elevation.
Moss6
Dumbest idea EVAH! There is no way for the system to survive the changing atmosphere based on elevation. jeez - They would just add more floor buttons in the elevator

I know you're a NASA guy and all but this idea has been around for a long time and NASA has been known to sniff around it.

I personally find the logistics of implementing the elevator to be preposterous. We are nowhere near having the technology in place to achieve an elevator. delusions of grandeur
I personally find the logistics of implementing the elevator to be preposterous. We are nowhere near having the technology in place to achieve an elevator. What about the logisitcs of having people living in an elevator for a week? That would be the worst. You'd probably hate everyone you were with by the time you got to the station. Also, with something that oblong, you'd think it'd wobble like crazy with the wind (even tall steel buildings do this to a small degree I believe, this would seem to be far more), and say there's a failure or a terrorist attack and that thing comes plummetting down? Yikes!
