Shaft Posted September 8, 2020 Share Posted September 8, 2020 Did his own contract! https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/cardinals-extend-deandre-hopkins-contract-making-him-the-highest-paid-non-quarterback-ever-per-report/ According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Cardinals will make Hopkins the highest paid non-quarterback ever with a two-year extension worth $54.5 million in new money, or $27.25 million per year. Hopkins also will receive $42.75 million guaranteed at signing. Rapoport noted that the star receiver constructed the deal on his own accord. Hopkins, who was traded from Houston to Arizona during the offseason, had three years remaining on his five-year, $81 million contract. Bill O’Brien definitely should have gotten a better return when he traded him but if this is what Hopkins wanted, and the Texans knew that, does it surprise you that they traded him? There's an article out there saying something similar. They made the argument that O'Brien used that money in better ways for the team. Was talked about last night in the game as well, that they could not afford to pay him what he wanted and also keep Watson and others. They said based on what Hopkins wanted he could only get traded to a team with a QB on a rookie deal. Will be interesting to see what happens with the TV contracts coming up for renewal, the pandemic fallout and how much salary caps go up in the future.
