They aren't always inlfated.  Green Bay used to routinely list Gilbert Brown in the 325-330lb range and everyone knew that he was much heavier.

Heh...tis true. Some stats are under-inflated :D

It actually starts back in college when players inflate their measurements to impress scouts.  Then, they carry over to the NFL.

Hell, I remember my freaking high school coach doing it. He made just about everyone an inch taller and 10 lbs. heavier. Seemed like an obvious ploy to mess with the opposing coaches.

My high school coach told a newspaper I was 5'7" 165 when interviewed about me signing playing soccer in college ... turns our I was 5'4" 125 ... to which he said, "well, you're bigger than you look". Great quote. He never really realized how small I was because of how hard I played. We still laugh about it ...

 

At the college/pro level, you think they'd have a better handle on such things!
