DETROIT (AP) -- Former Lions defensive back Bennie Blades is scheduled to appear in court Monday after being arrested for failing to attend a hearing in a child support case, the state attorney general's office said Saturday.

Blades was arrested Feb. 17 in Broward County, Fla., after missing the Jan. 7 hearing and was taken to Michigan by authorities for the appearance in 36th District Court, said Allison Pierce, spokesman for Attorney General Mike Cox.

Blades' attorney David Burgess said neither he nor Blades received notice of the hearing in January and Blades has not missed any of the 14 other court dates since the child support case began.

Blades joined the Lions in 1988 and played nine seasons in Detroit before Seattle signed him in 1997. After the Seahawks released him the following year, Blades -- a former University of Miami standout -- moved to Plantation, Fla., where he worked as a substitute teacher.

During a hearing Friday for a conference on his case, Blades told Circuit Court Judge Jeanne Stempien that he is trying to get a certificate so he can become a full-fledged teacher, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Blades pleaded guilty in August to failing to pay child support. The felony carries a maximum four-year sentence, but the court agreed to delay sentencing until it determined whether he complied with his plea agreement to pay off the owed support.

At one time, Blades owed nearly $300,000 in child support to the mother of a young girl, according Cox's office. The girl is one of at least six children Blades has with six different women.

Cox charged Blades for failing to pay child support in November 2003. If Blades meets the terms of the plea agreement, the plea was expected to be withdrawn and the charge would be dismissed.
