Inter Milan (0) 0 AC Milan (1) 1

game abandoned after 73 minutes

AC Milan win 3-0 on agg

The Champions League quarter-final second leg between Inter Milan and AC Milan was abandoned after 73 minutes here after Inter fans threw flares and bottles, one striking Dida, the Milan goalkeeper.

Referee Markus Merk stopped the game a minute after it had restarted, when Inter fans continued to throw flares into the Milan penalty area. The

German official had no option as the safety of the players was at risk - Dida, who fell to the ground after being struck on the shoulder by a burning flare, was replaced by Christian Abbiati for the minute played after the players had initially returned to the pitch.

The trouble started in the 70th minute after Merk disallowed a goal by Inter's Esteban Cambiasso for no obvious reason. The Inter fans behind Dida's goal began throwing flares and missiles, one hitting the Brazil goalkeeper.

There were so many flares thrown that firemen were needed to clear the Milan penalty area yet while they were doing this Inter supporters continued to hurl flares at the firefighters. Play was stopped for about 10 minutes with firemen trying to clear the flares, bottles and other objects while Dida received treatment.

Merk decided the players should return to their dressing rooms for 10 minutes while they attempted to restore something resembling calm among the Inter fans. It did not work. Within a minute more flares landed near Abbiati and Merk called a halt to the match which UEFA are likely to award 3-0 to Milan.

Inter can expect a severe penalty from UEFA, almost certainly playing three European games behind closed doors or away from Milan.

Whatever the merits of Merk's decision to dis-allow Cambiasso's goal there can be no excuse for the disgraceful reaction of the Inter fans, who will ensure the club they say they love receive a heavy punishment.

It is the second time in this season's Champions League that a game in Italy has been abandoned. In the first group stage, the tie between AS Roma and Dynamo Kiev was abandoned at half-time after referee Anders Frisk was struck on the head by a coin.

Italian football has seen a rise in hooliganism this season with grounds closed in the wake of trouble at domestic games.

There was trouble on the pitch, too, for Milan. Andriy Shevchenko scored the winner at San Siro last night but Inter would claim the European Footballer of the Year should not have been on the field after appearing to butt Marco Materazzi off the ball in the second minute.

None of the German officials saw the incident but UEFA are sure to take a closer look at it - last night's tie will keep the control and disciplinary body busy as they examine all the evidence from what went on at San Siro.

European football's governing body have shown that they do not tolerate such violence and if, he is found guilty, Shevchenko could be banned for three matches, which would rule him out of a possible appearance in the final. One way or the other there were no real winners in Milan last night.

Shevchenko's 13th derby goal was a wonderful piece of skill which seemed somewhat out of place on an ugly night in Milan. Receiving the ball from Kaka, the Ukraine striker beat Francesco Toldo with a 20-yard shot which the Inter goalkeeper had no hope of saving.

Milan's dominance over Inter continues - it is three years and 10 games since the nerazzuri beat their neighbours. The rossoneri look certain to advance to the semi-finals but football was the loser on a sad night at San Siro.

The goalkeeper set on fire, the field covered in red flame and smoke.....there's a great picture on the link below.

Just another evening of soccer in Italy. :D

Why did that guy fall to the ground when a flare hit him? He should have known that the Rosie O'Donnell soccer acting at that point wasn't going to get a penalty!

They should ban soccer for a year so these Oprahctards learn a little something like how to behave like human beings.

I couldn't imagine it in the NFL playoffs - because I can't imagine the Cleveland Browns in the playoffs. And even if they did wind up making it, I find it harder to believe that they would host a game.

Similar thing did happen a few years back at a regular season Browns game though.

That's funny! Cleveland in the playoffs. Almost as funny as Chicago there.
