CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers linebacker Mark Fields will miss the 2005 season after a recurrence of Hodgkin's disease, his agent said Thursday.

Fields missed the 2003 season while he battled the disease but returned last year to earn a trip to the Pro Bowl. He declined to sign Carolina's offer of a contract extension in March, saying he wanted to wait until after an annual medical checkup that was part of the cancer treatment.

A really nice guy going through a tough time. He is an inspiration. This makes the Thomas Davis draft pick even more important.

More info.

Pat Yasinskas, of the Charlotte Observer, reports agent Jim Steiner said Thursday, May 5 Carolina Panthers LB Mark Fields (cancer) has been diagnosed with a reoccurrence of Hodgkin's disease. Fields will begin chemotherapy in the near future and will not play football in 2005. "Mark would like everyone to know that he considers this "blip'' in his recovery a minor setback and that his expectations are to return to the field for the 2006 season,'' Steiner said.

He's a great guy and an excellent team leader. First it was Sam Mills and now we have to worry about Fields. Why do the good people seem to have tragedies like this happen to them? At least we have Brandon Short or Thomas Davis to step in for him. I hope that Fields is right and this is just a small blip in his comeback.

Sounds like he was being start about his annual checkups and the cancer has returned in the very early stages so hopefully, he will lick this again and be able to play again in 2006. :D

I know many people around the NFL and the Charlotte area will be praying for his recovery!
