Juggling defenses

For those who wait on drafting a DEF and then play the match-ups:

 

Do you hit the waiver wire every week? Or, try to find the two teams you could draft late that combine to make the easiest schedule.

 

Which do you think will be the teams that gives up the most fantasy points to defenses: SF, CLE, DAL, MIA?

 

Drafting WAS, you could have 7 games against the above teams if you paired them with:

PIT

CAR - 1st two will probably go too high, defeating the purpose

TB

MIN

ARI

NYG

exactly, I do both...there's always a couple defenses that just dominate the year, but then you have defenses that are dominant for about 6-8 weeks and then suddenly they suck and another defense emerges....

 

Vikings did that last year, I think...1st 6 weeks they were a nasty D(except when playing philly on MNF )

Thanks for the info. Right now I won't have much to juggle as I'm in a fourteen team league and most people drafted two defenses. but I'll be ready to pounce on the waiver wire.

 

Someone took Baltimore in the 3rd round of my draft -- I guess he's really sold on the 46.

I think that you are pretty much wasting your time trying to juggle defenses.

 

I suppose that if you have a mediocre DEF on your roster and you can get a DEF off of the WW that is going to go against a sad sack offense that week, it might be worth the effort.

 

Just don't bounce your head off of the wall when your regular DEF runs back two picks for TDs.

I generally take my DEF late. I like to draft one defense with a late bye weak that I think will be better than advertized. Every year at least one or two defenses emerge "out out of nowhere". I keep my finger to the pulse to see if I can grab one of these defenses off the waiver wire AFTER they have passed their bye week if I can get so lucky and BEFORE my defense's bye week so that I can safely drop it.

 

If all goes well, I end up with a mid-tier defense that generally won't hurt me and that will have some weeks that it really puts up points. And I really like not having to allot to roster spots to a defense.

If I can get one of my top 7 DEFs (BAL, NE, BUF, CAR, ATL, PHI, PIT) without having to reach, I'll go for it. If not, I'll play the match ups. I generally look two games in advance for the "next" DEF I'll pick up. Yeah, it takes up an extra roster spot. And if waiver wire pick ups cost you money, that's a pain. But outside of those top 7, its too difficult to draft with any certainty. Since there is still good value at other positions in the 8th round, I won't go DEF until the 9th, at the earliest.

I've been doing a juggle for the last few years. By the end of the year, I have good defensive play with one or two or even three teams I juggle and play matchups. But going with that approach usually costs you in the first month or so of the season, before you figure out the trends.

 

I have a weird one this year. I drafted the Ravens Defense as the first defense taken, but still plan on doing an early juggle. Colts in Week 1, a bye in Week 3. So I drafted the Bengals Defense way late, because they play the Browns and Bears in Weeks 1 and 3. I get the top defense and still end up juggling. Go figure. After Week 3, I'll kick the Bengals to the curb.

 

BTW, my league's defensive scoring is slanted more in favor of points-allowed instead of interceptions/sacks/etc than any league I've ever seen. That makes starting the Ravens against the Colts an especially bad play.

Buffalo became a good D last year and I picked them up off waivers. Jason Witten was a waiver wire pick up too, but I wouldn't recommend either as a general policy.

Call me crazy, but I am getting some good vibes from the Cardinals "D" this year and will probably sneak them in on one of my last picks; Of course, I had the same feeling about Minn last year and ended up tossing them a few weeks into the season. I picked up the Jets thereafter and rode em out all season (and they were'nt too shabby I might add). Pitts, Baltimore, Philly are pretty sure things, with NE and Carolina close by.
