(1) Aaron Ross CB is a pick I'm very happy with.. you can never have enough CB's, and that goes double for the Giants with how bad the secondary was last year.

(2) Steve Smith WR I'm torn on.. I always like having skill position players I've heard of (I don't follow NCAA very closely), and Toomer seems to be near the end of the line, so having Smith and Moss as young WR's is exciting. That said, I can't help but think we had greater issues on the OL and at LB than at WR here..

(3) Jay Alford DT is a player I don't know anything about.. but did we really need another DT right here? I thought our Dline was actually pretty good last year. Again, OL and LB are concerns that really should have been addressed first.

Aaron Ross is going to be an extremley solid corner at the very least. Nothing wrong with this pick.

I've never been a Steve Smith fan, and I think they whiffed on a lineman. How is Eli going to throw the ball if he has no one blocking? Maybe they figured he'd throw a pick reguardless so OLine isnt that important... :D

-Ross in the 1st was a great pick. The Giants secondary was awful last year.

-Smith in the 2nd could turn out to be good. Eli needs weapons. After Toomer went down last year, Eli's season went down the toilet. Having that big receiver opposite Plax is a must. Hopefully Sinorice Moss can contribute more this year as well. I was actually hoping they'd pick Brian Leonard at this spot. I'm not sold on the pass catching ability of Jacobs and Droughns. They were in the market for a fullback this offseason and this would have taken care of that problem.

-I'm guessing Alford in the 3rd was the highest rated player on the Giants board at the time. LB is a glaring need for the Giants D and that should have been the pick.

I'm very disappointed with the Giants this offseason. They waived a lot of players and Reese hasn't been able to aquire any veteran replacements through free agency. Day 2 of the draft had better produce some LB's and at least one OL.

(4) Zak DeOssie, LB. Steve's kid, so that's nice. And an Ivy Leaguer, so he's smart. I know he's supposed to be an excellent long-snapper, so that's nice. Not sure how great of an LB he is, but at least we're addressing the position.

Strengths: Is quick enough to beat blockers to the point of attack, has decent size and flashes the ability to hold ground when teams run at him. Takes adequate pursuit angles, has sideline-to-sideline range and always seems to be around the ball at the end of the play. Plays with a mean streak and a non-stop motor. Can change directions quickly and shows above-average man-to-man cover skills. Gets good depth and can cover a lot of ground when asked to drop into zone coverage. Takes the shortest path to the quarterback and flashes the ability to run over blockers when blitzing. Has experience lining up on the inside and is versatile. Blocked a kick during junior season, plays with a great motor and can contribute on special teams.

Weaknesses: Is tall, plays too high and gets driven back. Doesn't use hands well and takes too long to shed blocks. Hasn't shown great instincts and takes some false steps. Fails to break down in space, doesn't always wrap up upon contact and lacks great power as a hitter. Lacks ideal ball skills and isn't a playmaker in coverage. Missed 2005 spring practice after undergoing shoulder surgery, missed three games with a partially torn ligament in left knee in 2005 and durability is a concern. Played at a small school and there is some concern about ability to make the jump to the NFL.

Overall: DeOssie saw action in 10 games (two starts) at middle linebacker as a true freshman in 2003 and made 27 tackles and one interception. He became a first team All-Ivy League performer in 2004 when he started all 10 contests recording 98 total tackles, nine tackles for loss, and five sacks. DeOssie was sidelined for 2005's spring practice because of shoulder surgery. In the fall, he started the first eight games registering 80 total tackles, 12 tackles for loss, five sacks, one interception, three forced fumbles, and one blocked kick before sustaining a season-ending left knee injury. DeOssie returned to start all nine games in 2006 posting 103 total tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, and one sack.

DeOssie isn't instinctive or fundamentally sound, which comes as some surprise because he is the son of a former NFL player. He also lacks explosiveness as a hitter. However, he has good upside because of his speed and athletic ability for such a big player. He also plays with a non-stop motor and will put in the time t3o improve. DeOssie's stock is on the rise and he could come off the board early on the second-day.

Strengths: Uses wide frame to shield defenders from the ball and has the strong hands to make the tough catch in traffic. Catches ball away from frame and is a reliable target over the middle. Played basketball in college, times jumps well and flashes the ability to catch the ball at its highest point. Possesses excellent body control, tracks the ball well and can adjust to passes thrown outside frame. Flashes the ability to change directions quickly and has the potential to develop into a smooth route runner. Plays with a good motor and flashes the ability to sustain blocks once in position.

Weaknesses: Doesn't show a second gear when tracking the ball downfield and isn't going to stretch many defenses. Runs hard and can pick up yards after contact but isn't going to make many defenders miss, lacks breakaway speed and isn't much of a homerun threat after the catch. Doesn't deliver a violent initial punch and isn't going to knock many defenders back. Lacks ideal lower body strength and isn't much of a drive blocker at this point. Is coming off a season-ending shoulder injury and durability is a concern. Played at a small school and there are concerns about ability to make jump to the NFL.

Overall: Boss was redshirted in 2002. In 2003 he started six games, missing four with mononucleosis, and finished with nine catches for 60 yards (6.7 yard average) and one touchdown. Boss earned first team All-Great Northwest honors in 2004 after starting all 10 games and catching 39 passes for 506 yards (13.0 average) and five touchdowns. He started all 11 games in 2005 and caught 53 balls for 621 yards (11.7 average) and eight touchdowns, earning his second straight first team All-Great Northwest selection. Boss started six games in 2006 before a shoulder injury ended his season. He finished with 33 catches for 403 yards (12.2 average) and five touchdowns. Boss also played three seasons of basketball for the Wolves.

Boss is a small-school prospect who has the size, hands and athletic ability to develop into a quality backup. However, his lack of ideal speed limits his upside and he has to improve as a blocker. Boss projects as a mid-to-late round pick.

Shiancoes replacement? hopefully his shoulder healed nicely
