DMD -

I am in the midst of a slow draft & am considering picking up the Falcons receiver. I had jotted down him at #31 from your PPR cheat sheet a day or two ago. He is now at 55 with a down arrow.

What up (or, uh, down) here?

It looks like Roddy White has impressed the Falcons coaching staff so far.

:D

The entire receiver picture in ATL is in transition with the new coaching staff and Jenkins has been working in the slot in practice with Joe Horn and Roddy White playing X and Y. Laurent Robinson has also been impressive. His drop is more about the uncertainty there right now. I would not be surprised in a week or two to see him back as a starter again but until that happens, it is not as safe to take him.

I'm also wondering why it took them so long to drop Portis in their rankings. Seems like they waited for good news to come out and then drop him... :D

For the record I have seen Portis going in the first round of some drafts and we have never had him in the top 12 this season while I know others did at least before now. I wouldn't touch him personally.

He was #12 in PPR last week. Down to #14.

This brings up an interesting debate, though...maybe one you would give some insight on.

I have in the past made the argument many times that if you have a player ranked as X on your sheet, and that X came along and he was your highest rated player and you skipped over him, should the player have that ranking or a different ranking.

In other words, if you wouldn't touch Portis personally, should he even be on your rankings? Or maybe he should be somewhere in a later round when you would consider touching him?

Just curious, because honestly I would prefer to see rankings that reflect where the ranker would actually consider drafting a player, not where they think a player's ADP is going to be. I can get ADP from a source like Draft Tracker, and then compare against purchased rankings, or my own rankings.

Every players ranking reflects their projection and also considered their risk, upside, consistency and reliability. So in the case of Portis, he is ranked at that midpoint of all those elements and just because I would not take him (I actually would take anyone depending on where they fell). There is a difference between objective measures and the three or four players that I just have a personal thing about (Vick was another). Portis is ranked at the place where I think all his factors come together.

Our rankings have nothing to do with ADP. I intentionally never look at anyone's rankings, mock drafts, real drafts or average drafts until I am done making up my own mind on players through research and analysis. I personally do not even like ADP because I think it does as much bad as good for people. I don't like cusotmized cheat sheets either because it just considered nothing more than by his projection with nothing in it about their risk, upside, consistency, etc..

Besides, all my inbox needs is for me to not rank a player like Portis :D

not to mention if you are like me Manning or any QB would always be ranked 4th round or later.

imagine all the e-mails you would get then

Okay...I think I worded that a little poorly in that I do no think the Huddle's rankings are predicting ADP...I meant that to be more comparitive in saying that ranking are often found to correlate to ADP after the fact. Of course they do, because so many people use them.

The larger point was that if (someone doing fantasy rankings) would rank a player at overall number 19, and at number 19 they have a chance to pick that player with all 18 players in front of him being gone, why would they not make the player their pick? If for some reason they wouldn't, then there's another factor that means the player should be ranked lower.

I understand what you are saying about the difference between 'objective' rankings and a ranker's own personal views on players...but part of what I look for, and I assume others do as well, is a little bit of Dorey Wisdom mixed in. If outside of objective factors, DMD thinks A player should be bumped up/down so many spots 'just cuz', I would like to know that. Maybe that's just me...? All jokes about past rankings and such being left aside.

Oh there's plenty of me in the rankings to be sure.

When I say that I would not touch a player like Portis it is mostly because I hate getting players that carry risk, even if their most likely performance for the year dictates that they should be drafted at some spot. Ideally, I love to draft the players that I think will perform at their projected level but who have upside to do much more and yet not much risk of doing less. With players like Portis, he has upside in that offense but he has a demonstrable injury history and there's even the question if Betts is going to be used more this year and bleed some away from Portis.

Besides, there are a ton of variables to consider each time you draft outside of what name is at the top of a cheatsheet. I was pleased to see that hardly anyone ever follows a cheatsheet exactly in order even if they make it up themselves. I had a poll here a year or so ago that was included in my book that showed by the third round, none of you guys are going solely by the next name on the rankings and about half or more will vary from it starting in the first round.

There is a difference between how I (or anyone) would want to build my team and how players are ordered in rankings.
