Albert at Left Tackle

On day one of OTA's, Chiefs first-round draft pick T/G Branden Albert worked out at left tackle. T Damion McIntosh, last year’s starter at left tackle, worked out primarily at the right tackle position.

RB Larry Johnson prays his 2008 line can protect him better than last season. Johnson, who missed the final eight games of 2007 due to injury, participated fully in the practice session.

Henry not Practicing

A pulled hamstring will cause tailback Travis Henry to miss the Broncos' first minicamp in advance of the 2008 season. Henry suffered the injury Friday on the last of several 100-yard dashes that were part of the team's strength and conditioning program. Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said today he doesn't expect Henry to be available before Monday, which means he'll miss this week's passing camp.

Henry, who took a pay cut to stay with the Broncos, missed four games in 2007 because of injuries. He got off to a quick start after his arrival in Denver, rushing for 100 yards in three of his first four games. But he didn't reach that level again because of rib and knee injuries. He better heal quick and flash some promise if he wants to contribute in the crowded Denver backfield.

Fins Make Moves

The Dolphins signed three of this year's late-round draft picks, and added another undrafted college offensive linemen. Running backs Jalen Parmele and Lex Hilliard and defensive lineman Lionel Dotson were signed to multi-years deals. The length of each player's contract, and the amount of their signing bonus was not disclosed. Also signed was center Matt Spanos, a one-year starter at Southern California who has played every position on the Trojans' offensive line. Spanos is 6-foot-5 and 300 pounds, but had an injury-plagued college career, which was also interrupted because of academic troubles. Pair Spanos with Monday's signing of veteran guard Steve McKinney, who has experience playing both guard and center throughout his 10 seasons, veterans Trey Darilek and Ikechuku Ndukwe, and the Dolphins now enter training camp with four possible backups to center Samson Satele, the projected starter.

Any Dolphin news not related to the saga of dancing DL Jason Taylor is a good thing. We'll see if Parcells can piece together a good line for his backs.

Bills Linebacker Preview

Buffalobills.com confirmed the LB group on day one of OTA's. Paul Posluszny manned the starting middle linebacker spot, but John DiGiorgio did get some work with the first unit as well. Angelo Crowell was on the strong side with veteran signee Kawika Mitchell on the weak side. Rookie Alvin Bowen, DiGiorgio and Keith Ellison backed them up.

All three LBs are solid depth guys for your fantasy roster. Even with Crowell at SAM, he showed last year he can put up stats. True, he was one of the few healthy bodies able to suit up on a consistent basis for the Bills. The challenge for fantasy owners is correctly guessing which one will be a three-down player.

L.Evans Receives Contract Offer

WR Lee Evans confirmed Monday the Bills have made him a contract offer that would prevent the five-year veteran from becoming a free agent following the 2008 season. Evans didn't talk about any details of the offer. "We have been involved in negotiations with his agent, but per team policy, we don't discuss details," Bills spokesman Scott Berchtold said. "Our position regarding Lee has been consistent in that we want him to remain as a Buffalo Bill."

Evans had minor surgery on his shoulder this offseason. He is Buffalo's leading receiver the past two years, is currently in the final year of a five-year deal he signed after Buffalo selected him with the 13th overall pick in the 2004 draft.

More Surgery for Johnson

Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson will miss the entire month of OTA sessions after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Thursday.Johnson was having lingering problems with the knee injury that knocked him out of seven games last season. The Texans were hopeful that surgery wouldn't be necessary this offseason, but when it bothered Johnson during mini-camp two weeks ago, the surgery was scheduled.

Johnson is considered a top-10 fantasy WR, but lingering knee problems will scare owners. Hopefully the arthroscopic procedure will fix the knee and he will be good to go in September. Last season Johnson had 60 catches, 851 yards, and eight TDs in only nine games.

Stroud Moving Well

BillBoard blogger Mark Gaughan stated defensive tackle Marcus Stroud was moving well in Monday's opening practice. He underwent major surgery his right ankle in January 2007. Stroud showed good penetration through the line a couple of times and generally ran well. He's a very big-framed man, not flabby at all. At times it did look like he wasn't going full tilt on the ankle, and he said after practice it is almost 100 percent recovered, but not quite. He was very optimistic about his health and his new team after the workout.

If Stroud can perform well, he will be an immense help in occupying the offensive lineman. The Bills D-line was dreadful in 2007 recording sacks and QB pressures.

Kevin Smith Impressing

Lions RB Kevin Smith, the running back from Central Florida, already has impressed the coaching staff with his attention to detail, not just in running the ball, but in understanding the passing game and pass protections. "I think it's really important to him and he just kind of consumes this stuff. He's a gym rat,'' Lions coach Rod Marinelli said. "He's there all day and he loves to play.

This is great news, since we already think Smith will be the starter in Detroit this year. We suggest you draft Smith before you would draft Tatum Bell.

Sanders and Freeney Healing Up

Colts S Bob Sanders, last year's defensive player of the year, and DE Dwight Freeney, a former league sacks champ, have each undergone surgery in the past six months. That prompted doctors to keep both out of this weekend's three-day mandatory minicamp and likely out for the start of training camp.

While both guys are not partipating right now, they will be ready to roll when training camp rolls around. Sanders will most likely be a top-20 IDP defensive back while Freeney hasn't lit it up in IDP lately, but he has the potential.

Flacco Outplays Smith/Boller

ESPN's James Walker reports that Ravens QB Joe Flacco outplayed both Troy Smith and Kyle Boller at this weekend's minicamp.

A collegiate rule only allows Flacco to participate in one camp while school is in session so he will miss the next month and will rejoin the team in June. The high praise continues for Flacco, but things may change when the pressure is on during training camp with pads on. Continue to monitor this situation.

Winslow Wants More Money

He may not admit it, but Browns TE Kellen Winslow really wanted a new contract after he saw Dallas Clark sign a six-year, $42 million deal with Indianapolis.

Winslow still has three years left on his contract at $4 million per year, while Clark will be getting $7 million a year. No big news hear as we hear athletes wanting more money just about every day. Both TEs are very good but Clark was in the last year of his contract when he caught 11 TDs and earned his contract. Winslow needs to do the same over the next three years then he will get paid. Both TEs should be drafted as top-5 TEs in your fantasy draft.

Jenkins Svelte

Before weight problems, alcohol and depression derailed his once-brilliant career, DT Kris Jenkins was a three-time Pro Bowler and one of the most dominant interior defensive lineman in the NFL. The Jets are gambling Jenkins, who'll play NT for the first time in his career eight-year career, can recapture his past glory and signed him to a five-year, $30.25 million contract. So far, so good. He's weighing in at a svelte 6-foot-4, 360 pounds and appears ready to put a hurt on somebody.

Jenkins comes to the Jets with weight concerns and an injury history. He'll be a huge addition to the Jets if he can recapture his former greatness.

Simpson Needs To Develop

Bengals WR coach Mike Sheppard thinks that new WR Jerome Simpson has the best chance to replace former WR Chris Henry and his big play production. "With those big hands and his leaping, we feel Jerome has the ability to make those plays that were missing without Chris here," Sheppard says. "He probably has the best chance to evolve into that role on his way to becoming a good player in the league. He comes from a small program and there is going to be some time to adjust..."

Sheppard called other rookie WR Andre Caldwell "more cable ready." This was most likely his way of saying Caldwell is more ready to play right now. Currently Caldwell is lining up in the slot and Simpson is playing WR Chad Johnson's X position. Watch Simpson and Caldwell's development carefully as one or both of them willl have a chance to fill that third WR spot for the Bengals and in a year or two may be the replacement for Chad Johnson or WR TJ Houshmandzadeh if either depart via trade or free agency.

Dunn Ready to Play

The Bucs wasted little time signing RB Warrick Dunn after the Falcons released him in early March and now Dunn is ready to prove himself. "I would never consider myself a third-down back. It's not my mentality. I don't play the game that way," he said. "I don't think Coach Jon Gruden brought me here just to play on third down. He believes in me, and I just have to go out and prove it." He will get his chance. "I see him as being a front-line guy," Gruden said. "He is going to play a lot."

Dunn likely will split carries with RB Earnest Graham, but our best guess is that Dunn is on the field on 3rd downs most of the time. Consider Dunn a late round draft pick with limited upside.

Holt Pushing the Rookie

Seven-time Pro Bowler Torry Holt wasn't inclined to grant fellow wide receiver Donnie Avery, the Rams' second-round pick in last month's draft, much latitude during minicamp this past weekend. "He came to me a couple of times, shouting at me," Avery reported. Asked his early impressions of Avery, Holt said tersely, "Right now, I don't have any impressions of Donnie Avery. ... Hopefully, during training camp he'll show me something."

Sounds like the veteran is going to make it tough on the rookie to push him. Avery runs a 4.29 forty and should get several mismatches when lined up in the slot against nickel backs or linebackers. The Rams need Avery to stretch the field and that will open up the entire offense. Consider Avery a bench WR on your fantasy team.
