Saints GM says team considering RB James

Posted: May 6th, 2009 | Steve Wyche

The New Orleans Saints have held internal discussions about pursuing free-agent RB Edgerrin James, but they most likely will wait until after this weekend’s minicamp before re-visiting those conversations, general manager Mickey Loomis told NFL.com.

“There’s been talk about Edgerrin James, and we’ve spent some time evaluating that prospect,” Loomis said. “We’ll continue to do that. We haven’t made any decision or closed any doors on acquiring another running back if we feel that’s something we need to do. We do feel a lot better about what we have in-house than people do outside of our building.”

Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush are the top returning running backs for the Saints, who released Deuce McAllister after last season. New Orleans considered drafting a running back last month but used its four selections on three defenders and punter Thomas Morstead.

James, who has 12,121 career rushing yards, was cut by the Arizona Cardinals last week. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said James plans to continue playing and that teams were interested in the 10-year NFL veteran.

James was demoted for nine games last season before being re-inserted as the starter for the playoffs, where he played well as the Cardinals made a run to the Super Bowl. James, who had a career-low 10 carries per game and 514 yards in 2008, requested to be released or traded by the Cardinals at various points of last season.

:D And yet, you felt the need to post this story?

My +2 was a joke. I posted the story as a conversation starter because of the fact that some were saying that the Saints were looking to draft a RB and possibly fairly high. When I read this I thought it would definitely be a possibility as Edge would give them nice depth and a decent insurance policy should PT get dinged up.

Edge wants too much money & wants to be a starter. Saints won't pay it & he would have to split carries with Reggie, PT, Evans & whichever power back they decide to give a shot. Make very little sense.

I actually had read that Edge was thinking about retiring and taking care of his kids. So maybe he's not really that hard up for a starting gig and would rather be a role-player for a contending team. The Saints would definitely fit the bill. Like I said, I thought it would make for interesting conversation and I also thought that it made a little more sense than maybe you're thinking. But, you being a Saints' homer, I'll trust in your knowledge of the team.

Lets put this to rest.

  • 2 weeks later...

More from ESPN insider....

Personally I hope they don't sign him. I'm hearing allot of good things about PJ Hill.

Two weeks ago, rumors emerged that the New Orleans Saints were taking a close look at free agent running back Edgerrin James, but then these were essentially dispelled by Saints beat writer Brian Allee-Walsh of the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

However, just when the Cincinnati Bengals thought they were going to be the only bidders for James' services in 2009, Alex Marvez of Fox Sports reports that the Saints are still definitely considering signing the Edge. Saints general manager Mickey Loomis told Marvez that "We've spent some time evaluating Edgerrin. We think he can still play. We're going to continue to evaluate that and see where it ends up. We haven't made a decision on Edgerrin yet."

If signed, James would enter a competition with Pierre Thomas for carries in the traditional tailback role, while Reggie Bush would continue his dual citizenship as electrifying, one-of-a-kind talent and injury-prone draft bust. If no other backs are signed before the season begins, the Saints will march into 2009 with Thomas, Bush, Aaron Stecker, Mike Bell, Darian Barnes and Lynell Hamilton as the veterans joined by rookies Herb Donaldson and P.J. Hill.

Edit: Was talking to a buddy of mine about the situation and he brought up an interesting thought as to who is going to end up with that RB role on the team. What happens if the Saints go with one of the unproven guys to start the season, he doesn't pan out and they look out in the market and see Deuce McAllister still sitting there unsigned because of his likely 4 game suspension. Do they bring him back at that point? Would be less money and contract wouldn't be guaranteed because he wasn't on the roster during week 1.....

I would much prefer that scenario.

You mean this Edge to the Saints story isn't really dead yet?

I really hope that Edge doesn't sign with the Saints as I would like to see the combo of PT and Bush run the show and have more fantasy value versus sharing with yet another RB.
