I am guessing the righties will love this, since they has been in favor of slashing public jobs and a shrinking government payroll for some time....right?

Love it? No. Think it's a good thing, in the long run, especially if people realize the state can't provide you with everything? Abso-fackin-lutely.

I'm no righty but I was in Europe recently and God forbid we ever get to that situation.

Oh yes. Yes indeed. If you haven't got relatives there all the time you likely have no idea.

I'm curious then - and I'm not trying to be rude - if you know that Europe is so bad then why do you support those same policies that the left is trying to push here?

If I have you confused for somebody else I'm sorry.

I don't but neither do I blindly believe that everything in the US is automatically better.

For instance, having what amounts to a zero cost health system (because taxation has already paid for it) has enormous benefits.......but enormous drawbacks too. So does our "insurance" system. I like to think that each continent should look to the other for lessons learned and internal improvement but of course, neither does.

every policy pushed has it's pro's and con's, but I believe that you have to pick one that best suits the people in your country and what will work best in regards to population/economic growth...

I believe that socialized medicare is a sign that we are falling apart rather than taking the step forward as even the EU fell apart not even 20 years after forming...(might even be less than 15 years, but my memory is hurting right now)

I am sorry, but this sounds to me like the same lame "JFK CUT taxes...." when the right wants to justify tax cuts. Well yes he did....but to a level almost double what we have today. Similarily, Gremany is going on a huge austerity, budget cutting measure...which still involves a level of public services that would make your head spin over here.

Living in Europe for two years now, I do see a system that I admire in place, but the problem is a basic one:

1) everyone wants the public services but no one wants to pay for them, which means that EVERYONE cheats on taxes and income. To actually declare everything is too onerous. The system literally makes it impossible to play by the rules. In the US people are at least more consistent: They hate to pay taxes BUT they don't expect to get anything from the state (relatively speaking)

2) People abuse the system shamelesly. Just talked to a cab driver out in the country, their biggest clients today are hospitals, as Social Security reimburses the sick for their travels to the hospital (i think this is just for cancer and other serious illnesses) able bodied people will take a cab in from the country rather than driving their own car or taking the train. So what would have cost the person 10 Euros now costs the state at least 100.

I came back here 10 years ago to do a decorative painting class that lasted 6 months. It was a career making opportunity for me. Almost all the people in the class had had it funded by the state as part of a program for poeple to build their careers. Makes sense right? The house painter who could not afford this class has it paid for by the state knowing that he will go on to be a more productive member of society. The only problem is that most of the people were in proffessions that had nothing to do with decorative painting, and were just treating this as a vacation knowing that the class was funded, AND that their employer had to keep on paying their salary there AND keep a spot for them at work. So you would have stewardesses and nurses who had fun for 6 months costing the governemtn and their comapny a bundle and then go right back to their jobs.

This is unsustainable.

Which is too bad.

I will miss my nanny state.

My son goes to day care center that is AWESOME, and mostly funded by the state, parents pay in function of their revenue. My first year it was based on my American salary so I paid the maximum 30 euros a day, and now I pay based on my first year in france where I essentially didn't work so I pay 4 euros a day. My son goes to a daycare with a garden, a wading pool, with teachers that read to them, make puppet shows, where they make cakes that the staff puts in the overn, and where there is a different cheese on the menu every day of the week> It is great> In the US to have that I would have to work 12 hours a day, and as a result not see my family. I am aware that another segment of society is helping to fund this, and I am grateful...

you know, if Germany had not gotten into debt in the first place, then this would not have to happen. same with us, whatever gets you into debt better be worth it b/c there will have to be an unpopular day of reckoning, it is unavoidable. Think before you spend! It is kinda like Greece wanting to host the Olympics but not having any money to build the facilities for it. Spending money does not make you a power house, having money does. The GOLDEN RULE: He who has the gold makes the rules.
