Rudi Johnson/Chris Perry

Perry ran pretty well last night in the first pre-season game. Also caught the ball well.

From the Cinci Post:

Chris Perry had a moment he's been waiting for since last October. The Bengals' running back was healthy and it showed as he gained 41 yards rushing and added another 27 yards receiving in Cincinnati's 23-13 preseason opening loss to New England.

Perry carried the football 12 times and made three receptions in the game. He dodged defenders, skipped past would-be tacklers and proved he is recovered from two offseason sports hernia surgeries. Now all he has to do is get his conditioning level increased.

The plan is to use both Perry and Rudi Johnson in the backfield this year and capitalize on their different styles. Johnson gained 40 yards on six carries against the Patriots before coming out of the game.

"It's a great change of pace," said quarterback Carson Palmer. "You've got Rudi Johnson that gets in there and just wears the defense out. He's just so physical. Then all of a sudden you have Fast Jack Back that can run on the outside and run outside the backfield. He can get the ball to the edges of the defense. It's a great change of pace for us offensively."

But IMO, Rudi will continue to get a vast bulk of the work and ALL the goal-line carries. Perry has a lot to prove still, esp. in terms of staying healthy and Rudi has been the solid starter for 2 years. The thing that makes this worth monitoring is that Perry's rep is not just that of a scat back or change of pace guy. In college, he was quite the work-horse, once carrying the ball 51 times in one game. :D An interesting situation to monitor over the pre-season. But if I had to guess, I'd say Perry ends up averaging 7 carries a game.

If Cinci's offense delivers as expected, I'd think there'll be plenty of carries to go around - Rudi should get 20+, Perry should be good for what spain says, about 7-10. Maybe more, if the Bengals are really rolling over somebody.

Overblown hype. Perry looks pretty good in pre-season.....yawn. So did Dayne last year. No not saying it's the same (duh), the point is don't get wrapped up in pre-season stats or chatter. Johnson will get the lion's share again with only token carries by Perry. IMO.
