wiegie
MacInnis to retireBY JEREMY RUTHERFORD Of the Post-Dispatch 09/08/2005 Blues defenseman Al MacInnis will announce Friday afternoon that he is retiring after 23 NHL seasons. The Blues have called a press conference for 2:30 p.m. Friday. MacInnis played the last 10 seasons with the Blues, scoring 127 goals with 325 assists. He won the Norris Trophy as the NHL's best defenseman in 1998-99, when he finished third on the club with 62 points. MacInnis, 42, hasn't put on an NHL uniform since the third game of the 2003-04 season. Severe injuries to both eyes -– including a detached retina -– forced him to have surgery and miss the remainder of the season. MacInnis, who had at least two meetings with Blues general manager Larry Pleau in recent weeks, has not returned phone messages left by the Post-Dispatch. On Wednesday, both Pleau and Blues president Mark Sauer declined comment on MacInnis' future. MacInnis' NHL career ends at 1,416 games, with 340 goals and 934 assists for 1,274 points -- third-highest total by a defenseman in NHL history (behind Ray Bourque with 1,579 and Paul Coffey with 1,531). In 1988-89, he led Calgary to a Stanley Cup championship and was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP. MacInnis also won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2002 Olympic Games. I'll miss that slapshot from the point.

Looks like the off year allowed them to put things in perspective.

Hugh 0ne
Stevens was done too. Time to move on. He'd gotten slow, etc. He was still a badass and in good shape, but the time had come imo.
