Rich showed 3 instances where the refs blew the play dead instead of playing on and giving a chance to review. Mike basically turned it towards the NFL and said he'd prefer if the rule was that down by contact could be reviewed for these cases instead of accepting the heat for blown calls from his refs. wiegie Posted January 12, 2006 Share Posted January 12, 2006 The problem is that if the refs think a play is down, by not blowing the whistle they put the burden of proof on the video to show that the player was down. They really should implement a system where if a ref thinks a player is down, but is not 100% sure, that the ref can let the play continue but throw a marker down on the field indicating where the ball will be marked dead unless a challenge is called for and video evidence conclusively reveals that the ball was not dead. This way they can get around whistling a play dead without also putting the burden on the video to prove that they play was indeed dead.
