how to keep employees from surfing?

i have asked my employees(only have 2) not to surf the internet...one has complied and the other i believe has not....

I dont want them surfing because i dont need my Stores PC which is operates my Point Of Sale system getting any bugs etc....I use the PC to surf when i am working and nobody else is around but the only place i really go to is thehuddle and do surfing pertaining to suppliers and financing etc...

the employee i think is surfing works on sundays so when i try to check history for IE of course there isnt a sunday tab just LAST WEEK....yeah i could try and sift thru the entire last week but that is a pain....well i now have her working Wednesdays(mall winter hours 10-6)....well today i go into to check WED HISTORY and WED IS GONE ...DELETED POOF CAPUT.....now I have to infer that SHE DELETED WED's History :D ...she is a GOOD employee when it comes to doing her job and servicing customers....but this really pisses me off.....

so any gurus out there that can tell me how to safely see what she did on WED from a backdoor someplace?

also how can I take away all possible SURFING AVENUES and still allow myself to do what i need to do online?

I tried to put the IE icon in a secure folder that needs my thumb drive to access(not sure if that makes sense)...but i had an employee this past summer that still found a way to surf...think she went into the programs menu and went in to a website that way to get IE to open.....how can i keep this from happening?

no i dont want to fire her...and yes i will be having a talk with her...and yes if it continues i will fire her.

Trust here is a big deal, and your employees need to know why you have to restrict them. Questions:

How much access do they need?

Won't a prog like Net Nanny work?

Do you have the plethora of AV,AS, etc. s/w running?

How PC/Internet savvy are they?

Ursa should be by shortly, I'm sure he'll have better advice than I have.

I would still instill the reasons why surfing is bad, to your employees!

How much access do they need? they dont need any access BUT the PC has to be online to process Credit Card Transactions

Won't a prog like Net Nanny work? Never heard of it

Do you have the plethora of AV,AS, etc.  s/w running? You never have enough...I know there is an inherent risk with me surfing BUT if anything happened it is ME not an employee

How PC/Internet savvy are they? I dont know and dont think that matters....what if they were stupid enough to open an email attatchment cause they were checking their web mail and BAM i now I have a VIRUS...they dont have to be savvy because they dont need the net to do their job

That's the double edged sword. If they are stoopid you worry about the email thingee. If they are savvy, you worry about them getting around your protections!

:D URSA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is a lot of different spyware software that will capture everything that an employee is doing. Install one after hours and then review it after the employee has left.

Any key logger out there will work here to track what she is doing.

Cliaz, JoJo....no dis intended, but..............

Keg, agree or disagree...... you'd rather have a protection/gate/iron curtain up than having to check on their web footprints? Correct?

Maybe I misunderstood and maybe a both here. :D

i want the protection but i also want to be able to see if they are doing things so i will know if i need to readdress it or FIRE someone

get eblaster system wide monitoring, it will email you with all the things that are done on your pc's. If you notice they are surfing after a warning, then confront them with the proof.

I have it on all my pc's

Hmmm. The one I use at work is $25,000 a year, so that's likely out. :D

The Spectorsoft package does look good and comes recommended by a reputable source.

You could also check out Cyber Patrol which is $40 a year per PC. I used to use this at home when my kids were young. If I remember correctly, you can set a window of time when you can browse, if you wanted to do that, and importantly it will also block porn, hate and violence sites via a database that is refreshed automatically, like an AV product does.

How does your POS application communicate? Is it a web app - in other words, is it a browser that connects to a web site? Or is it something else entirely? I was just thinking about being careful that you don't block the one app that you do want to access the Internet. I'm fairly certain this won't be an issue and in any case you would be able to exempt that web site from blocking.
