Pacman appeals, now awaits hearing date

By JIM WYATT

Staff Writer

Pacman Jones and his legal team will meet with NFL

Commissioner Roger Goodell within the next two weeks in hopes of getting the Titans cornerback's season-long suspension reduced.

Jones officially filed an appeal of the suspension with the NFL by Monday's deadline, and the two sides are in the process of setting a hearing date.

For now, the NFL Players Association is involved in only a limited role.

"We will support him like we do every other player in this position by providing him with background information, past appeal cases and any other information he may need,'' said Carl Francis, director of communications for the NFLPA. "But (Jones) has a legal team in place, so they are going to argue his position (during the appeal).''

Goodell, who suspended Jones on April 10 for conduct detrimental to the league on numerous occasions, is expected to hear the appeal.

Jones declined to comment on Monday. Manny Arora, the attorney who traveled with Jones to New York for a pre-suspension meeting with Goodell, did not return phone messages from The Tennessean.

Greg Aiello, vice president of public relations for the NFL, said Jones will be able to state his case to Goodell and the hearing "should be held within the next two weeks.''

Francis said the union talked with Jones' representatives in recent weeks, but he's not sure anyone from the NFLPA will attend the appeal hearing.

Jones, who has been arrested five times with no convictions since the Titans drafted him in 2005, has pending cases in Las Vegas and his home state of Georgia.

In handing down the suspension, Goodell left open the possibility of Jones being reinstated after 10 games if he follows specific conditions and is not convicted in either of the two pending cases.

Goodell also informed Jones that failure to comply with the conditions would result in additional discipline, and

possible banishment from the league.

In a letter that Jones paid to run as an ad in The Tennessean earlier this month, he said his attorneys advised him to appeal and the basis "will be to clarify some of the facts and address the unprecedented punishment that was imposed.''

I like Goddell. Hopwever, if Pacman sees anything less than 10 games I will really be dissappointed. ***holes like Pacman need not see the field.

+1

Just curious, too, as to what Jones' legal team will use as a basis for appeal? I mean, the guys been arrested 5 times (more than 2x the number of years he has in the league!). What will they say? He's being profiled? Pacman is missunderstood? Just in the wrong place at the wrong time(repeatedly)? Come on.

The League really needs to start getting tough on these chumps and make it clear if they cant avoid trouble they need to find a new league to play in. There's just no excuse for grown adults to be consistently getting into the kind of trouble some of these fools do. :D
