Brian Townsend (if you watch High Stakes Poker, you will now him from the last season), a high stakes internet pro who goes by the name sbrugby, and Sam Farha (the runner up to Moneymaker) ae playing a high stakes heads up match at the Bellagio. Been going for a few days now, with several sessions.

They are playing a mix of Pot Limit Omaha and No Limit Hold Em, with blinds at 500-1000, and they have discussed going up to 1000-2000.

I read this in an article on CardPlayer.com and they reference Townsend's blog, where he says he ended their first session down about 500K, and at one point in their next session he was down 1.2 million but managed to come back and squeeze out a small profit (prob asomewhere around 100K).

He says they have had probably 5 pots already over 500K (each player started with 500K in front of them) and another dozen or so in the 200-500K range.

Just insane the money these guys have.

...interesting...

Just imagine cashing out your 401K at work, taking the money to the casino to play in some high stakes games ... you lose it, you're toast. You win big, you pay back your 401K and are off on your professional poker playing life.

Not really any different than using your 401K money to start a dry cleaners, or whatever ... just you have your answer about whether or not there is a future in it for you a little faster with cards than you do with the dry cleaners.

I'm sure there is more than one guy that's lost their life savings in this way to the big guns ...

Also, note that some of the big guns may not be all that profitable playing cards (Matusow is a name that comes to mind as possibly not being a profitable player against other big name players), but they subsidize their cards with endorsements, other businesses or investments. See doctors, investment banker types, the owner of the LA Lakers, etc.

With Matusow, he is probably a fairly profitable poker player, he just loses a lot on the sports betting and other stuff. He is the epitome of conpulsive. I think he said the million he won at the '05 World Series was gone in like 3 days.

I think Matusow is the epitome compulsive, and of a non-profitable poker player. There is no doubt he cashes, but there are story after story out there of him being broke and needing to borrow dough from buddies, and get staked in tournaments. I would wager his losses are mainly from poker......... he can't get awat from it.
