It doesnt seem to me like these employees were fired for being unable to speak English but because they were speaking Spanish amongst themselves after being told not to. That does seem a little extreem.

i dont like it when i have customers that come in and they clearly can speak english well and then i hear them speaking in a foreign language

makes me feel uneasy not knowing what they are talking about....if they want to speak without me hearing them maybe they should step out of the store....i mean from a safety pov how do i know they arent working out a way to rob me or steal something(and I am not just talking about spanish speaking people)

Just out of curiosity....the first ammendment requires that every person has freedom of speech. It doesn't mention the language. I can assure you they know english...or at least enough to get by. But they may like to converse in their native toungue while they are not at work or whatever. What should you really care. If they are robbing you...stop them!!!! LOL. I cannot believe we are having this discussion in a free society.

As it pertains to English at work, my guess is that an employer has a right to control the manner in which his/her employees interact with the public. Now, if a customer comes in speaking spanish....waving around say 10K to buy a bunch of home entertainment equipment...are you gonna let Jose converse with them....in Spanish...or force him to abide by the rule. And if you force Jose to speak spanish in this situation...can the employer be fined and ordered to pay the employee. This is all rediculous.
