Major WSOP Announcement

I've been hearing this rumor for a while now, and it was officially announced today that the final table of the World Series of Poker will not be played until November 9th, 4 months after the tournament was played.

The idea is that this will create more media buzz, and better rating on ESPN as the winner will not be known as they can air the episodes leading up to the final table before it is actually played.

I'm not sure if I like this or not. Pros are that it gives these players a chance to get some publicity and, for the lesser skilled players, gives them a chance to get some training and research their opponents over a period of time rather than have to adjust immediately. This is of course the biggest con IMO, as it disrupts the flow and possibly integrity of the tourney. Also, no word on the contingency plan if one of the players is unable to play in November for whatever reason (death, medical issue, Visa problems, etc.)

Also, it really messes up the time frame of running the WSOP Pool.

Thoughts?

One of the hard parts of winning it all is playing that last day on fumes, not succumbing to the fatigue, etc... Then again maybe we'll see better poker?

So many reasons why it's a bad idea. Hugh unfair advantage to the skilled player. If Daniel Negranu makes the final table and then gives 9 unknown players 4 months to study hundreds of hours of his play on TV with his hole cards exposed.. . .

Oh wait, the whole thing is a sick crapshoot and elite players never make the final table anymore. . . .just lucksacks like Jamie Gold. Never mind, as you were.

In the last few years, there's been a 1 or 2 day rest before the final table, so there's a little time to regroup. Still, not 4 months worth.

gotcha, i do recall that now.

That could be a circus, how many sponsors can I put on my body?

I've listened to Joe Sebok and Gavin Smith discuss this a bit. Gavin is definitely against it. Joe says, hey, give it a shot, see how it works, and we can always go back if it flops. At first hole card cams were looked down upon, but look what that did for the popularity of poker.

I don't care for it, but, I suppose will look at it open mindedly. I guess if it gives these guys all shots to get sponsorships and extra publicity, more power to them.

Now, I've actually heard that Jamie Gold's game is really improving lately... it's Jerry Yang that luckboxed to the win.

I think WSOP lifted their restriction so echnically you could go Nascar and have patches all over. (Though it may have been the WPT that changed, not 100% sure now)

Were I playing within the same bankroll I'd follow them to the ends of the earth to play against either of them.

Funny story. . .when the Shiekette and I first started dating, she showed up at the casino one morning. I was flooring. Reigning WSOP champion Robert Varkoni was sitting in a 6/12 limit game. There was a seat open right next to him. I asked her "how'd you like to play against a world champion?". She said "why not!?" and played in his game for about 3 hours. I caught up with her later in the day. She commented "I'm not impressed."

If Jerry Yang can win the WSOP, my Mom could...and she can't even shuffle a deck of cards. The Main Event is the weakest of the weak events, but airing it 4 months later is ridiculous for the reasons you stated.

Did anyone see Yang's play with 3-3 in the NBC heads-up last weekend? I think it went raise, call pre-flop. He check-calls the flop, the turn and check-folds the river when 45 overcards are out there. Un-bull-ievable.

Worst WSOP Champ ever...........

There are so many to choose from. The year that Greg Raymer won the big one, everyone said that he was just an amateur donk. Turns out he and Joe Hachem are probably the 2 best players to win that tourney in the last 8 years.

What's funny is that anyone from the east coast (well, not anyone, but quite a few) knew Raymer. He was respected at 2+2 for his game and his contributions there, but he was not a household name as he was more of a loca lplayer to the East Coast, though I believe '04 was his 3rd trip to the Main Event if I am not mistaken.

Hachem has turned outto be a very good player. He is apparently a bit of an azz even more now though, but, a good player none the less.

ETA: Ferguson and Mortensen may have a few words with the claim though.
