loaf
just like cleveland to put the horse before the cart. Why not let the GM pick his guy?
tazinib1
That didn't take long. The Belichick tree still has roots in Cleveland after all.

Azazello1313
just like cleveland to put the horse before the cart. Why not let the GM pick his guy? they probably feel the head coaching job is more important. for whatever it's worth, the broncos are approaching it the same way. Rovers
yup, my thoughts exactly....that pretty much takes Pioli out of the game. The rumor is that Pioli came in with a somewhat ridiculous set of demands which the Browns were not willing to cave in to. Frankly, I think IF Mangini learns from his mistakes, he could yet be a decent HC. Two issues: He alienates players and he tends to get very conservative when under pressure. The more he wins, the more conservative he gets, forgetting how he won in the first place. He DID learn a few things in NY which he corrected, like 7th round projects and FA trash heap offensive lineman make for a 4 win season. After (and at times even before) the Titans game he went ridiculously conservative on defense. Case in point, he has the best playmaker on the defense (Rhodes) playing 20 yards off the line, effectively making him a non-factor. In Mangini's first year he was blitzing Rhodes, letting him jump routes... why he went conservative is a head scratcher. The bizarre thing is this talk about Romeo staying on as DC.... pig devilz
they probably feel the head coaching job is more important. for whatever it's worth, the broncos are approaching it the same way. they obviously do. denver is a much different situation, i think in cleveland they needed a General before a Lieutenant. Azazello1313
they obviously do. denver is a much different situation, i think in cleveland they needed a General before a Lieutenant. another way to look at it, from the ownership perspective....you've got two open spots, the two most vital leadership positions in your organization. you might very understandably want to maintain some say over who ends up filling BOTH spots. if you hire the head coach first, you can still basically hire whoever you want as GM. if you hire the GM first, you basically have to let them hire "their guy" as head coach. now maybe if there's someone like bill parcells out there, it's a good idea to go ahead and do that. but I can see why most owners would want to hire two of THEIR guys to run their organization. Rovers
Re-treading will get them nowhere. Bad hire. Belichick was a retread.... lots of parallels here. Both failed on their first try, both in the same coaching tree, both D minded coaches, both have no personality. Mangini wasn't ready 3 years ago... IF he learns from his mistakes, it could work out. I'll put it at 50-50.
