driveby
Went to the gym yesterday and there was a young kid working out with a personal trainer. He couldn't have been more than 8 or 9 years old. What ever happened to riding your bike and shooting hoops in the driveway and playing tackle football in the yard and climbing trees? /oldfartrant

McBoog
Real weight training is bad for kids until they are about 16-17. The best exercise for them is cardio and body resistance exercise (pull-ups, free squats, push-ups and sit ups until they can't do any more, two sets each). This gets their natural strength well set and then the weights can get tossed in once they are physically more mature.
Perchoutofwater
The last time I was on a health kick I noticed several kids at the gym with trainers. My first thought was similar to yours driveby, but then I thought it was better than sitting in a recliner playing PS3 or X-box all day. I also noticed that most of the exercises the trainers had them doing were isometric in lieu of weights, and when they did use weights it was very light with very high reps. They also did a lot of cardio and agility type work. If done that way I don't have a problem with a 10 year old doing it, if it is their choice to do it. Perchoutofwater
In Texas, them bullriding kids start working out to get strong to ride. We started lifting weights at school during off-season in 6th grade, so that would be about 11 or 12.
Double Agent
Don't even think about trying to ground this kid. That's Little Hercules. His parents should be shot. While it is very strange to see someone that young lifting, there's no danger in it if done the correct way. You just have to use extremely light weights and do reps of 15-20. Really no different than doing push ups or lunges without weights.
