godtomsatan
http://tastybooze.com/2009/02/bill-hickss-...an-performance/ Right before he died, Letterman cut it out of the show. Hicks himself said that it was because the Pro Life people threatened a boycott of the network, because of the edgier joke. ETA: Hicks and Letterman were pals and Dave had been a big supporter of his career until then. This snubbing was a big blow to Hicks' in his final days. montster
i happened to turn on letterman last week when hicks's mom was on and they aired that set from hicks. letterman put the blame on himself for why it didn't air -- he said he saw it and didn't like it and had it cut. he seemed genuinely sorry, and said that seeing it again he wasn't even sure why he cut it in the first place. you could tell the mom was still hurt but she was gracious about the whole thing. bushwacked
I wonder how big Hicks would have gotten if he remained alive. His humor would have been much appreciated over the last 8 years. Hell, you watch his political stuff from 20 years ago and it was eerie how much it related to the present. bushwacked
wasn't denis leary accused of basically ripping off hicks's style after he died? I think so. Leary mimicked the angry smoker thing, without all the ingenuity and humor.
whomper
My favorite line I ever heard from him was this. He said in a job interview the person asked him where do you see yourself in 5 years. He said celebrating the 5th anniversary of you asking me this question.
