Big John
Is there a time prior to the start of a new season that a player can be cut without a cap penalty? If so, what is the time frame? TIA After June 1, he can be cut with a reduced cap penalty for that year, as the signing-bonus portion of the hit can partially carry over to the following year instead of all of it hitting during the current season. Footballjoe
aren't the skins like 8 mil over the cap?.... So what 's different from any other year? Its time to cut some of the old timers and get some young blood in there.

However, this year, since it is the last year of the collective bargaining agreement, all paid bonus money counts against the cap THIS season. There won't be any spreading it out to next year. CaptainHook
Because this is the last year of the salary cap, there are new rules. If players with expensive bonus clauses are cut this year, teams will have to take the full value of the remaining bonus money. In the past, that money has been prorated over the life of a contract. So if a player received a $10 million bonus on a five-year deal, teams were charged $2 million per year. Now, if that player is cut with two years left on the contract, that team would take a $4 million cap hit in 2009. from Indy Star I think I misspoke. This is the last year with a salary cap. Next year is still under the current CBA, but no cap. They year after, it expires. Teams can sign guys however they want, but they must be careful if a cap is put in place (as it usually is). Owners don't want an uncapped year to happen.
