keggerz
my dad called me and is getting a couple of popups and NONE of his programs will work they all come up saying the same thing: "The application has failed to start because the "application configuration is incorrect". Reinstalling the application may fix this problem" I tried to go into RUN and type MSCONFIG and that wouldnt even launch....he has tried to boot into safe mode but says he doesnt see that as an option...i am trying to help him remotely but when he is logged off and logging back on I of course cant help him during that part....the 2 pop ups are made to look like they are part of the windows security center and prompt him to pay for a full version for removal...when I go into the control panel and try to click on the windows security icon it gives that same message as above.... any and all help is appreciated....also I asked in another thread if I could get infected by helping remotely and that never got answered so if you know that answer it would be greatly appreciated too... if you need more info then just let me know. Kid Cid
So far your doing the right things. You may want to have him download a scanner to find if there are other nasties running around his computer. You should also warn Dad that porn sites are the worst for catching viruses. I could give him a reccomendation that hasnt got me infected with anything if he needs it sounds like its time to salvage what he can and reformat Edited August 4, 2009 by Robash

keggerz
I probably should just give Nuke a call and ask him to help me
bigmike4969
Check out this link and see if this is the culprit. When you mentioned something about a security center, I thought it might be that security center virus that looks like a real windows security program. My pc got infected with this a couple of months ago and I followed the instructions here and it seemed to help. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-remo...-securitycenter

bigmike4969
I'm not sure if sending him that stuff on a disc will help out or not. You could try and have him boot to safe mode and try running that program. Check out this link as well, could be a possible solution to your problem. http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-103686-...t-get-around-it
Kid Cid
Typically, if you have to run something to remove a virus, it should be run in Safe Mode. The thing is that it is going to take cleaning stuff out of the registry to remove the virulent behavior. Finding out what to remove could take a long time. If you knew that Dad had all the CDs then it would probably be quicker to back stuff up, reformat and re-install. I'm not sure how current his backup is (if he even has one). Czarina
We got that one about a year ago. We could use the computer offline, but never use the internet. We ended up forking over the $100 to some guy to get rid of it for us.
Thunder Chicken
If you can, I would install Malware Bytes and Advanced System care on a thumb drive and run the two programs from the thumb drive while in safe mode. Advanced SystemCare MalwareBytes I keep a thumb with these, and Avast, for friends and family when they have 'puter probs.

keggerz
update: My dad isn't the real patient type and was talking about buying a new PC(not needed for his uses)....so I made some calls for him in his town and found someone that will remove the malware/spyware from his system for $75....wish I could have fixed this for him but I guess when it is all said and done that $75 isn't to bad

At least you tried and got some good advice.
