TV Question

I have a 61" Panasonic LCD TV. Had it 6-7yrs now.

Just yesterday I noticed a lime(ish) green spot about the size of a fist in the upper right. It's not a solid green spot. You can see through it. But it's there on all channels so obviously it's the TV.

I googled the problem, but didn't really come across anything that jumped out at me.

Any ideas?

61" and it's an LCD? That must of cost a ton 6-7 years ago. Are you sure it's not a plasma? I own a 50" Panasonic plasma and it has been great. I guess I don't have much info, but 61" seems pretty big for LCD. Typically they were DLPs or Plasmas in that size IIRC.

It's an LCD. Was about $2500 back then.

Sounds like the optical block. Failure is often referred to as "blue haze" even though it can be other colors. Results from long term exposure to heat from the lamp. From what I read it was an unanticipated failure mode by the manufacturers. All brands are susceptible, but Sony seems to have received the bulk of the negative publicity from these failures. You may want to call Panny to see if they can help you out, even though your warranty is up, as I understand the replacement of the optical block can be expensive.

Edit: Ummm, yeah, I'd say it's probably an "uh-oh" moment.

Do you have kids under the age of 6? I thought my flat panel went bad in a corner and it was just crayon. Rotten offspring.. they take after my wife.

Youngest is in fact, 6.

Nah, not crayon. Definitely something with the TV.

Ah, so it is a projection TV. I thought you were actually talking about an LCD flat panel display of that size. Anyway, I'd suggest hitting up the AVSforums. There are some pretty smart bastages around that part of the interweb (at least with TVs and such. They probably draft kickers in the 6th round).

He posted a link to an LCD. I'm guessing it's his model. Crazy that he got it for $2500 though. I thought they would have been at least double that back then.

Scooby's hubby's friend I think had a RPTV. Those have ways to adjust the focus. Not sure about LCDs.

His TV is a rear projection LCD. Not the same thing as the what most people think of when talking LCDs. I had never heard of this, so I looked around. Found a page describing how it works here

Of course this does nothing to help with the posted problem, just thought it might explain why it was not as expensive as we thought it would be.
