The TV Guide version: The marching style is Prussian in origin, so I imagine at one point almost every organized military force in the Western world probably used it. West Europe eventually decided that it was too 'Evil German' and abandoned it. Other militaries aren't so sensitive so they keep using it-- in many cases around the world it exists as a result of Western European influence.

It's not dissimilar to types of salutes, for example this disappeared after the rise of Nazi Germany as well-- again, it was too 'Evil German' and was abandoned.

you don't have to say "evil" German - it's redundant.

Like "Drunk Irish" or "Dirty Italian" or "Stupid Polish" or "Hairy Greek" or "Illegal Mexican" or "Smelly Frechman" or "Racist Southerner" or "Fat Albert"
