godtomsatan
After Saturday workouts, it looks like Greg Olsen (Miami, FL) is separating himself as the top TE in the draft. Especially after running a 4.47 in the 40. It doesn't really look like there is a whole lot of depth at this position like there has been in recent past, so Olsen could be the only 1st Round pick. Bill Swerski
Did anybody else catch the O-linemen running the 40-yd dash? Some of those guys looked like they had never run a sprint in their lives.

Honestly, I don't think coaches value the 40 much when it comes to linemen. I think the cone drills and the 10 yd run are much more important factors as the coaches care more about their explosiveness in the short area than anything else. Maybe it's just me. However, I would agree after watching some of those guys it was almost comical as a few almost toppled head over heels and then just bumbled down the field where as a couple of them, can't remember their names off hand, Kahlil I think was one of them looked very fast fast for 300lbers or close to it. One lineman, Barnes maybe, I think ran 4.8. Edited February 24, 2007 by irish

I like that kid from Whitworth as a late round pick too. Kind of like Schefler last year. He was the second fastest and caught the ball pretty well. Outshined
There may not be much doubt as to who the top tight end prospect in this draft is anymore after Greg Olsen of Miami (FL) scorched an unoffical 4.45 today. In fact, Olsen was a full .2 faster than the next tight end in Indy! It's quite possible that Olsen jumped firmly into round one and made himself millions of dollars with that time. On the other hand Zach Miller of Arizona St. was only able to manage an unofficial 4.83 clocking. Vernon Davis went 6 overall last year and Winslow the year before. Miami has been pumping out the Tight Ends lately. Is he worthy of the #7 pick? He will be moving quickly up the NFL draft boards, possibly into the top ten....Do the Vikes look at him? I'm not convinced until I see him block.

I was talking about high TE draft picks and Miami TE's at the same time and I worded it wrong and did not feel like editing it. I figured someone would say something...and it had to be the profesor

He was the second fastest and caught the ball pretty well. Kind of impressive day for Michael Allan. Tied for the 2nd best 40 time and vertical jump, then had the #1 broad jump for TEs. The downside is that he only put up 19 reps on the bench press. He's 6-6 and 255lbs, and probably very raw being that Whitworth is a D3 school. It will be interesting how far up a great workout day can bump a guy like this up.

Bronco Billy
Miller ought to go in the 1st if on-field performance & football ability mean anything. He's a proto-typical TE. Olsen may be drafted ahead of Miller if a team wants a TE who will force LBs to extend their zones. As far as O-linemen, Joe Thomas made the case for being the first pick off the board with a sub-5 sec 40. To have an OT of his size with that kind of agility, speed, & power is rare in the NFL and can anchor an O-line for a decade or more. C Ryan Kalil ought to also be a 1st round pick after posting a sub-5 sec 40. Don't ever estimate the value of a lineman that can get 10 yds downfield ahead of a RB - those guys can wreak havoc at the second level and turn 7 yd runs into 25 yd runs. Levi Brown on the other hand showed that the only way he'll beat a RB downfield is if he is chasing a triple cheeseburger. The guy has sloppy footwork (to be kind) and is slow as molasses in January. He hurt his stock quite bit with his lack of performance. The "lean in & overwhelm with weight" technique works in college, but in the bigs it'll lead to a 3 year career. This kid had better get his act together & do some speed/footwork training real quick. Edited February 25, 2007 by Bronco Billy
