Keeper League Rules

1. decide how many you want to keep (and if there is a max and/or min)

2. decide method in which you would like to keep players:

- some leagues play where you lose the pick of the current year for that player's draft spot from the previous year.

- a lot of leagues play where held players are the tops spots.

- if you play in a league with a min/max (ie: 3-5), need to determine order:

- often see a supplimental draft (worst to first) until everyone has the designated number ( 5 from the example), then the draft begins it's serpent at "rounds 6-7."

haven't slept much last night so i am certain i have missed some nuances and other options.

A few of our rules (that we still tinker with) are:

- Can keep 3 players.

- No keeping first or second rounders. We tried it before where you could, and it just worked out better if the big names are back in the pool. Plus, most of OUR keepers were from the middle rounds.

- You lose the draft pick from where he was drafted the prior year (i.e., Gore was my 4th rounder this year).

- You can keep him for 3 years. If you trade him, the term doesn't reset. The player MUST go back in the draft pool after 3 years...kinda like a contract year :D .

- Free Agents can be kept. If you keep one, it's your 12th rounder...keep 2, and it's 11 and 12...keep 3, 10-11-12.

- We set up a separate playoffs for the non-playoff teams. They play for draft picks, winner advancing for the fisrt pick next year, serpentine.

There's a bunch more, but my omelette is ready...

We can keep up to four. A team loses its top draft pick for each keeper. A team is not required to keep anyone though.

We can only keep as many at a position as you can start during the season. So we could only keep one QB but we could keep 3 RBs, for example.

We draft based on the previous season standings with no sepentine. If you daft based on previuos years standings you may want to include rules to prevent tanking.

Our waivers are done based on standings early in the week and then become first come first served on Thursdays.

We allow draft picks to be traded for the next seaon. However with roster requirements we see a lot of "a player and next years 16th round pick" for the other teams fith round pick. (usually not rounds 1-4 because of the keepers).

I hope these help out. I know sometimes rules can seem silly but they just become part of the league's character.

I am in a 12 team , 2 player max keeper league . You can choose to keep no one if you like and your top picks are designated for keepers if you keep. Example your 1st and 2nd rounders for Addai/Magahee. In our league you can trade for multiple 1st and 2nd rounders But regardless your TOP 2 picks are for keepers whether you have 2 1st rounders or a 1st and 2 2nd rounders, the best picks go toward keepers. There is no max on how long you can keep a player. Adrian Peterson will be on the team that drafted him likely for his career. Best thing about our league is you can trade players for draft picks and really slam the draft!! Say you drafted three RB's last season that are top ten picks this season, you cant keep three so trade one for a 4th or 5th rounder, usually a fifth since the team getting the player also has to forfeit his top pick too since the new player will be a keeper. We also have a declaration date August 26th or the day after the last pre-season game since you dont want to declare a keeper only to have him injured in the last pre-season game etc... Another good aspect is the first two rounds of the draft do not snake since multiple teams will keep players and the beginning of the 3rd round the draft snakes 1-12 / 12-1 etccc. Retiring teams players are dumped into the pool. New owners get the top pick say the number 1 or if theres more than one new owner for the new season then we have the owners pick a state and use the pick 3 lottery number for the state and the lowest number gets the first pick. Example team 1 picks Maryland team 2 Delaware. Maryland pick3 is 235, Delaware is 468, well the guy with Maryland 's number wins the top pick. Easy and effictive. I failed to mention that Declaration date also allows the commish to drop the previous years players into the pool so you can start to rank your players pre-draft , on the draft page at CBS SPORTSLINE. Only keepers will be on the rosters after the declaration. Then you know who is available and can plan , and its nice to see who's keeping who. Waivers the first 6 weeks of the season are rolling, meaning you can work your way up to the top waiver priority if you dont use waivers. We start the season with the worst team prior having top waiver priority. After week six it restes every week according to records, so the worst teams have a better shot at improving themselves if a player appears out of nowhere etccc. I think keeper leagues are awsome. Good luck. I like to look for young rookie RB's in the 6th to 8th round area every year in hopes of trading that 3rd top RB the next season. You can see my signature. I drafted Adaai in the 7th round in 06. I also drafte Willie Parker and Magahee last season and was able to trade Willie Parker before declaration for a 5th rounder. Its always sweet to pad that extra pick early in drafts. Rb's are about the only position ever kept besides Peyton and Carson this season in my league. Always plan to have a RB on your radar that you think will have better value the next season. Addai fit that bill and worked out great. It allowed me to trade away that top 12 RB pre-draft and get an edge on the competion. In keeper leagues its always good to look ahead. Im guessing your probably not new to Fantasy so , I apalogize if the latter end of this post bored you. Another thing we have been debating is trading of future draft picks. We havent decided yet, but we have agreed that future seasons would have to be paid up front!!! It key to keeping he integrity of the league intact. No sense trading future picks to have a team drop out and leave the league stuck!!

I love our keeper league format:

1st year: Standard serpentine draft

2nd year: Six players may be kept, but only three that you drafted during the first six rounds. You can't keep more players than you start at any given position (i.e. no more than two RBs).

3rd year forward: Six players may be kept, but only three that were on your prior year's keeper list. You can't keep more players than you start at any given position (i.e. no more than two RBs).

No trades allowed after the Week 10 games begin.

Waiver claimes run each week on Wednesday at midnight. Priority is set each week from worst to first. Thursday morning begins the free for all period which ends after kickoff on Monday night. Players that are dropped during the week must go through waivers the following week. Free agents must go through waivers the following week once their games begin. In other words, if it's 8:00 on Monday Night, the only free agents available will be Patriots and Ravens.

Limit of one completed trade per week and three roster moves through waivers and/or the free for all.

These rules have worked great. They stimulate trading and keep the draft stocked with quality players, and a sharp team call still go from worst to first, even if he or she has what looks like a lousy set of keepers to start the season. Last year I inherited the worst team in the league, started out with Delhomme, Gore, McGahee, Mason, Booker, and Gonzo as keepers, reuilt the team through trades and the draft, and ended up winning the league championship.

I don't like the rule where you can only keep certain players such as any drafted past the 3rd or 4th round. One guy probably got lucky on that a few times and then made it a rule. :D

If you are referring to me, nope. I'm the Commish, and everything is voted on. Majority rules. But that's not to say in my 17 years of playing I haven't gotten lucky. And that's actually why we have the rule. If you have a good draft, you SHOULD have SOME keeper worthy players after the first and second rounds...any monkey can pick LT...

Last year we had it where you COULD keep a 1st or 2nd rounder...and the only ones that were kept were LT, Rudi and Manning...

The guys who kept Housh in the 5th, or Moss in the 10th (still at OAK), or Colston in the 15th...those are the ones with the solid playoff teams this year.

We've tried MANY setups, and this is the one that has worked the best for OUR league. If your team is only 2 guys deep, well, then you're in trouble anyway, I guess... :D

I wasn't referring to your league but in general. Does everyone stay competitive in your league each year?

Barring injuries, yes. We have 6 playoff spots (12 team league), and there are only 3 that have clinched a spot...one has Brady and a mediocre supporting cast, and the other has Romo/Owens...

We have tinkered for 5 years now, and this was the format that seems to keep everyone happy.

What seems to work pretty good in my league is as follows:

- 10 team league, keepers start after round 10, you can keep them for three years

- you announce keepers prior to the start of next year's draft, you can keep up to 5

- the player you decide to keep HAS TO BE drafted automatically four rounds earlier than you drafted him the last year (ex: 10th round pick has to be your sixth round pick next year)

- any player that is a keeper traded to you automatically has to be your fifth round pick the next year

- any player you pick up that either wasn't drafted or was dropped (with the exception of big name player dropped due to injury) are also automatic 5th round picks next year.

Hope the suggestions help.....makes it more interesting than keeper leagues where you simply keep players and draft without them in the pool.... I think that way is very lame since you don't have to make any smart decisions whatsoever about whether the player you decide to keep might be better than who you could draft in say, the 6th round.

Take it easy
