Heinz Field's playing surface

Just limit the use of the field by other teams/leagues/schools.

They had a day of state championships a day before a game, right?

Yeah, that might help, but it doesn't really matter after the end of October when the grass stops growing. No natural surface field will be great even if you plan to re-sod.

During the weekend of the mud game, they had 4 HS championship games on friday, Pitt played there Sat (if I remember correctly) then the Steelers on prime time.

We also had very unusual rain that weekend.

I am not in favor of pulling the high school games as that is the highlight for many kids high school career. I played in one of those games back in the 80’s in Three Rivers Stadium and my boy has played in two championship games in PNC Park. I would never take that away from the kids even if it meant another mud bowl.

Agreed - they just need to find a better solution than putting a layer of sod on top of a layer of sod in the midst of a deluge.

Can they update the drainage system or was this a once in 20 years situation? The Steelers sure played in crappy weather this year. It didn't seem to matter where it was (outside of a dome) either.

Honestly, the two games that were really mud soaked both seemed to be freakish as far as the weather goes. I am not saying that we don't get good soakers but that was not normal. The second time around that field just never was able to recover. I'm not certain that the drainage needs updated. I mean it sure did seem like it did during the sod over sod game but I have been there for plenty of Pitt games that were in the rain or after a good rain and it was nothing like the mud bowl.
