POSTED 4:01 p.m. EST, February 18, 2008

BEARS BOUNCE MOOSE

In a move that could bring the team a step closer to reuniting with receiver Marty Booker, the Bears have cut veteran wideout Muhsin Muhammad, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network.

Muhammad was under contract through 2010, and was due to earn a base salary of $1.6 million in 2008.

Schefter also reports that the Bears are expected to release two other veteran players on Monday.

Muhammad was a second-round pick of the Panthers in 1996, and he spent nine seasons in Carolina. The Panthers released him in February 2005 in lieu of paying a $10 million roster bonus. Less than 12 hours later (could it be . . . tampering?), he signed a six-year, $30 million deal with the Bears.

With the Panthers still scrambling to find help at the wideout position, we don't rule out a return by Muhammad to Carolina.

Should mean that they will re-sign Berrian. Muhammad hit the wall a couple of years ago. Other than his glorious one season for CAR, he was always just an average possession receiver.

Well said and that one very solid season bought him several more at a higher pay check.

Muhammad was never lightning-fast to begin with, but he really had trouble getting open this past season. I was never sure if that was due to a lingering injury or Father Time.

Good move by the Bears, who were forced to over-pay for him when they were desperate for WR talent a few years back.

+1. He also dropped way too many passes when Orton was at QB, which didn't exactly help an offensively-challenged team.

Also-

Bears released RT Fred Miller.

Miller was a solid pass protector during Chicago's 2006 Super Bowl run, but his play fell off considerably last season. At 35, he won't be viewed as a starter by other teams and may retire. John St. Clair is next on the depth chart at right tackle, but the Bears will look to upgrade in free agency and the draft.

Yet another-

Bears declined to exercise DT Darwin Walker's option for 2008, making him an unrestricted free agent.

The option was for $5.2 million. Walker, 30, dealt with injuries in 2007 and only produced one sack, although he often had to occupy blockers as a nose with Dusty Dvoracek on I.R. Walker's strength is rushing the passer.

Bears DE Alex Brown's two-year extension included $5 million up front.

This will keep Brown from requesting anymore trades and give him the edge over Mark Anderson to start. Anderson worked much better as a pass rush specialist during the Bears' 2006 Super Bowl run, with Brown excelling on early downs.

Well, don't forget that OGun maintains a heft price tag despite having a really solid year in 2007.

It is NOT a given that Berrian will be a Bear next season. He wants top ten money and the Bears are looking like if they sign him, it will be with a franchise tag. For as good a person and leader Moose was, he needed to be cut. Very happy to see that something many fans wanted to see happen did happen. Let's see what else happens with the offense this offseason.

Most people would say it's ridiculous that he wants top 10 money. But is it? If Berrian was on a team with a good OL and very good QB, he'd likely actually be a top 10 WR. Consider how he'd do in NE, for example, if Moss leaves.

Randy Moss, Chad Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Marvin Harrison, Tory Holt, Anquan Boldin, Larry Fizgerald, T.J. Houshmanzadeh, Roy Williams, Steve Smith, Hines Ward, Andre Johnson, Terrell Ownes, Marques Colston, Donald Driver, Santana Moss, Lee Evans, Derrick Mason.

For starters. Is he better than any of those 18 guys? I'm not hating, but let's have a little perspective. He dropped a LOT of balls last year.

Now, he MIGHT be worth that $ to the Bears for one year, since they've left themselves with no alternatives if he walks - but that's mismanagement at that position on Angelo's part more than anything.

Good post Pope, hope all is well.

I agree with what you said. Bears have till 3pm local time to designate him as the franchise tag player. I feel they will.

Ruben Brown is also out now. Bears down two offensive linemen. Hopefully they sign someone via free agency and draft a solid guy.

Without getting in to the specific merits of your list, which is well put together, I'd be disinclined to count Mason and maybe Houshmandzadeh and Evans as better than Berrian given a level playing field. My point wasn't how good IS he, my point was how good would he be with a decent QB? Most, but not all, of the guys above have good to great QBs throwing the ball for them.

He dropped a LOT of balls last year.

And I remember reading that the Bears coaching staff blamed his poor route running for several Grossman INTs last season.

It will be interesting to see what he's got with another team if he leaves. Maybe he's Brandon Lloyd?

LOL that might be ttue, but hey maybe hes just not cut out for the #1 spot at WR, i mean like every one is saying he did have a great year at CAR but was he not the #2 option, Im not backing him up or anything cause i would not pick him up for myself but lets just see what happens
