Bill Swerski
Well Bill, Sweeney has a contract at $11 million dollars per year, has been injured most of the past 2 seasons, and can't play the field. Thus, no trade value AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So blame Allard Baird for that ridiculous contract, not Dayton Moore for his inability to trade him BECAUSE of that ridiculous contract. Sweeney played 122 games in '05 and is only 33, so he's not exactly an washed-up old geezer yet. $11 million a year for a guy who can hit .300 and 25+ homers in a lineup with NO protection isn't that unreasonable, especially in today's market. There are a number of teams who'd like one year of service out of him and it'd be in the Royals' best interest to deal him for prospects now, even if they had to eat a few million of the last year of his deal. The A's and Mariners could both use a DH. Edited December 18, 2006 by Bill Swerski
whitem0nkey
I just noticed this deal but great signing by the tigers. Bonderman 4/$38M Extension When you look at Padilla, Meche, Lilly and other in this market. this is a steal.
whitem0nkey
i saw this on espn.com its a list of next year FA. but we may see some of these players get moved in the middle of the season when some teams will fall out of contention. here are some - Jason Jennings, Carlos Zambrano, Ichiro Suzuki, Carlos Guillen, Torii Hunter, Jermaine Dye, and Andruw Jones. As a sox fan i could not be happier to see him leave. and as a baseball fan he will be missed, he still could have played and was a classy guy the whole time, played with a team he like his whole career. Ursa Majoris
wow Major your already on the 21st? I checked the date on my watch, typed it in and then put (yesterday) after it. kwolf68
Just heard a rumor that Zumaya is going to the rotation! That would make the Mesas signing make more sense. But Zumaya had arm problems at the end of last season, so does it make sense to give him MORE innnings? I know he'll get more rest, but the Cubs are shifting Wood to the pen to reduce his work load. Well, if he pitches out of the rotation, chances are 95% of all his fastballs will be of the mid 90s variety instead of the 100+ we see from him in the pen. When pitchers go from the pen to the rotation they have to pace themselves a bit more which could help him. Conversely, some starters who we think throw 92-94 mph can all of a sudden start hitting 97-99 on the gun once moved to the pen, because they can just go throw caution to the win. As a White Sox fan, I don't care what they do with Zumaya, the guy is a nasty freak and will succeed anywhere.

whitem0nkey
That is a crazy amount of money for an above avg pitcher. 7 years!! do you think he will be worth 18MIL a year in his 5th, 6th, & 7th. some may even say he is not worth that money next year. but i guess that is what this crazy market dictates I wonder what will Zambrano(SP?) get next year? Bier Meister
i think the money out there is pretty crazy regardless. he will be fine for a few (he's only 28), but i am not sure i see him staying 6 years there.

Skrappy1
That is a crazy amount of money for an above avg pitcher. 7 years!! Exactly, he's a solid, workhorse, above average pitcher, but he clearly isn't the ace that he looked like he might be early on in his career. Over the past 3 seasons Zito has a 4.05 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP while pitching in a weak division and in a pitcher's park. Moving to the NL can only help him, but IMO this is a crazy deal both in per year salary and length of contract. I knew some team would overpay for him this offseason, but my god. Scare Tactics
everyone is overpaying for everyone.... when dust settles, it's not going to look as "crazy" I do agree with that... But now, as a Mets fan, I did want Zito, I really didnt care if he's not the "Cy Young" guy he was at 1 time, he is still above average, and will be much better suited for the NL (Specially if he can throw that curve for strikes) and I really didnt care about what they pay for theese players because its not my money. I mean Zito might not be "Great", but he will help any rotation.. Though I dont see the Giants as much of a contender... So where does this leave the Mets, there is no way Omar is going to go into the season with the current rotation.. 1.Glavine 2.El Duque 3-5 Perez,Pelfrey,Maine??? Pedro on the DL for probably 1/2 the season if not more So Im guessing Milleage,Heilman and possibly another player will be traded for some pitching... (I hope?) whitem0nkey
I really didn’t care about what they pay for these players because it’s not my money. 1st, im a season ticket holder for my team, the white sox. And I do care how they spend the money, so should you even if you don’t buy season tickets. 2nd you can’t win if you’re foolish with your signings. Also a diff. point of view. if I was zito I would rather get 15-16 million a year and play for a winner, then get 18 million and play for a looser. Sorry giant fans I don’t mean to Sega! on your team. Edited December 29, 2006 by whitem0nkey
Bier Meister
Sorry giant fans I don’t mean to Sega! on your team. a couple of good years and you get cocky. i was a season ticket holder in sf before moving to colorado. i am very happy when they spend money to improve the team. after losing schmidt (33), i think bringing in zito (28) helps fill the void for about the same $$ (i still don't think he'll be there for 6 years)... the team is not bad. having the oldest outfiled (and the injuries that go with it), didn't help last year...... we'll see what happens. EDIT: Date Transaction 12/19/06 Signed Ryan Klesko to a one-year contract. 12/8/06 Re-signed LHP Steve Kline to a two-year contract. 12/6/06 Signed C Bengie Molina to a three-year contract. 12/4/06 Signed INF Rich Aurilia to a two-year contract; Re-signed 3B Pedro Feliz to a one-year contract. 12/2/06 Signed OF Dave Roberts to a three-year contract. 12/1/06 Re-signed 2B Ray Durham to a two-year contract. Scare Tactics
2nd you can’t win if you’re foolish with your signings. Also a diff. point of view. Im not saying to spend $17 Mill a year on some bottom barrell player, but for an above average young pitcher who will Definately help your team win games, why do I care if they spend $13 a year or $17 a year.. I could care less. And NY is a big market place, the money is there, and doesnt seem to be an issue... I mean the Mets had bid like $40 Mill. just to try and win the rights to talk to Matsusaka... whitem0nkey
Don’t get me wrong, he is a nice player and im glad he is out if the AL. and since Ted Lilly got $40MIL/4 years, than this zito deal is not that bad. Maybe I just have not adjusted yet to these prices. Well I would think the market would have to level off at some point. We all know it wont go back to what it was. Sorry Bier Meister, but don’t worry my team had its dark days, many of them. For long periods of time.
whitem0nkey
Oh and dam you Scott Boras and the cubs who paid for your law degree!! Boras is great at what he does. and i dont blame some teams that dont negotiate with him. IIRC the sox have a thing that they will only do 1 year deals with boras players.
