HowboutthemCowboys
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Dodgers apparently are on the verge of acquiring the power pitcher they've coveted, as free-agent right-hander Jason Schmidt on Wednesday told former Giants teammates he accepted a three-year, $47 million offer to pitch in Los Angeles. bushwacked
Royals signed Gil Meche today. 5 years, $55 Mil. I've seen him pitch a quite a bit for the Mariners. I'm no scout but this guy is a solid #3 pitcher at best. 55-44 with a 4.65 ERA, and doesn't really have any great stuff... 11$ per year....What the Frick? What the heck is happening in baseball!?!?!?!?!??! At best this is a message signing for the Royals to the rest of mlb. And I'm ok with that. Mike Sweeney's $11M salary is off the books next season, so the Royals are sending a message to the rest of the league, which is that the new GM, Dayton Moore, is willing to take some gambles. Not overly excited about the name, but I am excited the Royals are making moves to get pitching into the organization. And Meche is still only 28. Chief Dick
Well Bill, Sweeney has a contract at $11 million dollars per year, has been injured most of the past 2 seasons, and can't play the field. Thus, no trade value AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So blame Allard Baird for that ridiculous contract, not Dayton Moore for his inability to trade him BECAUSE of that ridiculous contract. Skrappy1
Royals signed Gil Meche today. 5 years, $55 Mil. That seriously has to be one of the worst signings ever. The guy has ok stuff and all, but that's a huge contract for a pitcher who has had some injury issues and has been mediocre at best pitching his entire career in a pitcher's park. Astounding. And you guys know how happy I am about Andy Pettitte coming back, right? Between ditching that punk Sheffield for some quality young arms, and correcting the mistake they made of letting Pettitte walk three years ago, this has been quite the quietly productive off-season for the Yankees. Atlas
And what are the Tigers going to do with Mesa in the bullpen? Unless they're going to try to move one of the young arms. I don't see them trading Jones or Zumya.

I don't see them trading Jones or Zumya. Was kind of a strange signing for a team with a stacked bullpen. I think they would trade Jones in a hearbeat if they could get anything of value for him. Zumaya is their closer of the very near future.

Ursa Majoris
I remember them locking up Santana a year or two ago, have they bought out Mauer or Morneau's arbitration eligible years yet? They're in the process of tying up M&M now. Skrappy1
They're in the process of tying up M&M now. Sooner or later, these ridiculous salaries paid to nonentities are going to bankrupt some teams, though, or make them completely non-competitive by forcing them to trade their talent away. The thing about these salaries is, the teams wouldn't pay the $ if they didn't have it. In a way it's nice to finally see some of the small market clubs spending their money for a change instead of just sitting on it. Revenue sharing has been going on for years now and there are many teams whose payroll has shrunk or stayed the same since it began. Creative accounting aside, I seriously doubt many of these teams were losing money prior to the start of revenue sharing, which means that they were just pocketing that money, which of course runs counter to the whole purpose of revenue sharing to begin with. And it has largely been the relatively smaller market teams making these outrageous signings this offseason, traditional high spenders like the Yankees and Mets have actually been pretty quiet. One thing that these salaries will definitely do though it put even more of a premium on farm systems and the younger blue chip prospects. You're starting to see teams lock up their younger talent for 5, 6, even 7 years by signing them to long term contract extensions early on. These extensions usually pay the player more than they would make early on, but save the team money in the longrun by buying out the players' arbitration eligible years, and sometimes even a year or two of free agency. The Indians have done that for years, the Mets did it with Reyes and Wright, and the Twins are smart for doing it with Santana, and working to get it done with Mauer and Morneau. The Twins have always run their organization and minor league system very well though, so I'm sure that they'll be ok. As a Yankee fan, I also have to say that it's extremely refreshing to see Cashman having the foresight to realize the way the market is shifting. He actually seems to be intentionally stockpiling some good, young, inexpensive talent for the future. I've killed many (most) of his moves for years, but maybe there really was something to the grumblings that Steinbrenner and his Tampa cronies were responsible for most of the Yankees' moves over the past few years. It is nice to see them actually spend some of their money wisely for a change, and if it continues it will eventually bring their payroll down to a respectable level. I think they would trade Jones in a hearbeat if they could get anything of value for him. Zumaya is their closer of the very near future. Just heard a rumor that Zumaya is going to the rotation! That would make the Mesas signing make more sense. But Zumaya had arm problems at the end of last season, so does it make sense to give him MORE innnings? I know he'll get more rest, but the Cubs are shifting Wood to the pen to reduce his work load.
