H8tank
LONDON (Reuters) - A U.S. troop pullout from Iraq would leave the country as a potent launchpad for international terrorism and Washington would be forced to go back in within a couple of years, a leading al Qaeda expert said on Tuesday. Rohan Gunaratna told a security conference at Lloyd’s of London insurance market that Iraq, like Afghanistan in the 1990s, would become a “terrorist Disneyland” where al Qaeda could build up its strength unchallenged. If U.S., British and other coalition troops withdrew from Iraq in the next year, he said, “certainly the scale of attacks that would be mounted inside Iraq, and using Iraq as a launching pad to strike other Western countries — countries in Europe, North America - would become such that after two or three years, the U.S. forces will have to go back to Iraq.” http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070515/us_nm/iraq_alqaeda_dc In other news... WASHINGTON - Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton separately declared their support Tuesday for a March 31, 2008 cutoff in funds for the Iraq war, two Democratic presidential front-runners abruptly shifting positions on the issue at the heart of the 2008 race. Savage Beatings
I think what we should do is say to the Iraqi "government" that we will continue our military presence in Iraq as long as they continue to need us there, but that for every day after October 1, 2008 that they are not prepared to police themselves, we will take full control of their oil wells. So many people think that this war is about oil... I just wish that it really was. Blood for oil? Well, they're getting our blood, let's start seeing the oil. AtomicCEO
If our goal is actually to fight terrorism, there are much smarter ways to do it. Let's not pretend that we are in Iraq to save the world from terrorism. We're there because we have to be, because we did a foolish thing that had only tangential ties with terrorism. Brewer
H8's expert notes that the epicenter of terrorism has shifted from Afghanistan to Iraq, 1500 miles close to Europe, and presumably the US. I wonder why that is?
