chester
I have a friend and his wife who are relocating there for work (3M) and need to purchase a house. They are in their early 50s, no at home kids. Any suggestions about where to look for a house would be appreciated. (or where not to look)

Any suggestions about where to look for a house would be appreciated. (or where not to look) Lived in Columbia for years, it's my wife's hometown. Depends on price of course, but you can hardly go wrong with Green Meadows area, for newer houses. The area back in the woods to the east of the University is pretty good too. That is where Coach Stewart lived. We lived in a pretty "mixed" area, and went to West Elementary which we found fine, but may be a bit too, um, colorful, for some. They may want to look at Shepherd Elementary area. It is hilly and has some nice houses. There are new subdivisions out there as well. My mother-in-law lives in Bluff Creek which is an upscale new area off Nifong. As for bad neighborhoods, there aren't many and it is pretty darn obvious when you are in one. Personally I would avoid placed like Sunrise Estates, etc. North Columbia on the other side of I-70 can be sketchy at times. Make certain to tell them they need to ask about rentals in the area. The college town atmosphere can get a bit irritating when your house is next door to the local party palace.

cre8tiff
excellent hunting co-eds don't count. It is kinda nice to be served at McDonald's by someone who holds a Phd, however.
The Holy Roller
My youngest daughter just moved to Columbia and I have several good friends who have lived there 20+ years, one of whom is in the moving business. He knows everything there is to know about housing there. PM me and I'll send you his info.
