darin3
Ugh. About a year or so ago, I had a real problem with my Dell laptop. The screen goes black (like the "monitor" has lost power) but the machine is still on. In order to get the thing to flip back on, I have to open and close the laptop, and sometimes it goes into "sleep" mode (although I've instructed it to never go into this mode). All in all, it was a pain in the ass. Anyways, it hadn't done this in a long ass time, but now it's doing it again. This laptop has been a workhorse for me, but I'm thinking it might be time for a new one. My wife has been considering a new desktop and has also talked about a laptop. I could perhaps give her this one (she only uses it for home use - internet and stuff). OK, long-winded way to get to my real question....... I don't want to spend a lot. Under $850 if possible. I don't want Vista. I prefer the "glossy" screen to the matte finish screen. I know H8 will be along shortly with my answer. TIA.

darin3
Thanks isle... living here in Austin, I now have many Dell contacts, so maybe I'll check with them. I just know that H8 and many of the other "gurus" here do not recommend Dell.

isleseeya
Now I am curious as I am not a lap top expert so I defer to those who are ...what is the problem with dell's ? Just curious
H8tank
Anything is a good deal if it is cheap enough. Dell desktops = nightmare for some. Some of their laptops are fine, again if it's cheap enough.
