DMD
Just finished a tough auction. It had 14 teams and 20 man rosters with $200 salary cap which meant there was plenty of money to spend ($2800) and lots of players to get. Since it was a larger league, the top players went for much higher costs at times (about 20% inflated from a 12 man league). I went in wanting to get a great QB (Six point passing TDs, -1 interceptions and 1/20 passing yardage), and I wanted to get 3 RBs that could play since we have a flex (QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, TE, Flex, PK and DEF). That was pretty hard to do and I probably overpaid for Palmer. I also got into bidding wars over and over and ended up with crappy WRs considering what I preferred. As always, for the want of maybe $5 extra I could have grabbed some nicer players but I spent early and had to watch players pass by. One point receptions. Standard performance otherwise. DEF and PK are worthless. I wasn't all that happy until I went and saw what the other teams looked like. If Peterson comes through (The rookie) at all, I will be okay I think. My roster: QB 29 Carson Palmer QB 2 Trent Green RB 45 Ronnie Brown RB 36 Cedric Benson RB 18 Adrian Peterson RB 4 Lorenzo Booker RB 4 Adrian Peterson RB 2 Sammy Morris RB 1 Kolby Smith RB 1 Kevan Barlow TE 3 Alge Crumpler TE 1 David Martin WR 25 Andre Johnson WR 16 Calvin Johnson WR 5 Derrick Mason WR 3 Michael Jenkins WR 1 Sidney Rice WR 1 Ashley Lelie DEF 2 Dallas Cowboys K 1 Jeff Wilkins The auction (not including DEF and PK) QB 42 Peyton Manning 29 Carson Palmer 28 Tom Brady 26 Marc Bulger 22 Drew Brees 22 Donovan McNabb 16 Jon Kitna 11 Ben Roethlisberger 11 Vince Young 9 Matt Hasselbeck 9 Tony Romo 8 Philip Rivers 7 Jay Cutler 5 Brett Favre 5 Matt Leinart 4 J.P. DMD
DMD, overall I like your team but after WR1 I would have rather seen someone like housh for $21 then Calvin and Mason for $21 combined The problem with a 14 team league auction is that there are plenty of guys driving up prices so talent is expensive and yet plenty of guys still with money so that bargains later are very hard. I went for a middle ground and it quickly became apparent that while I could get the 3 RB and QB that I wanted, the rest of the positions were going to suffer. That did not bother me with TE, PK or DEF but WR is my problem area far as I am concerned. What happened was that I took Calvin Johnson and Adnre Johnson at bad times in the draft for a great value though I am generally okay with what I got. But my WR3 really suffered and I kept missing very nice players by maybe $2 that I no longer had. But after I looked at those teams with WR depth, none of them have the RB/QB that I do. If I had it to do over, I would have followed my original plan and gone for Kitna to save a few bucks and have a good QB. I was also pissed that someone threw Lorenzo Booker out pretty early when there was a lot of money left and I had to pay $4 for my MIA backup while Michael Bennett only went for $1. Oh well - an auction is always fun and you never know what is going to happen. Going in I knew that in a 14 team league, you almost cannot build a very balanced team to win, you have to have as many high-scoring stars as you can and fill in best you can on other positions. So I went for QB and RB strength where the points and consistency was. There were a few decent values (Holt surprised everyone) but for an auction there were far fewer than usual because of the 14 teams and deep rosters. Roo
Thanks DMD - man that looks like it was a tough go. Unbelievable prices on the the top RBs - did those teams suffer? I think in that situation I go for three solid backs (i.e. Benson Rudi MJD) grab a QB with upside (Leinhart maybe) and spend the rest on a stud WR with two suitable guys to back him up. Easy to say in retrospect though
DemonKnight
Thanks fer posting DMD. My local $ league is 16 man $200 auction and I rarely see anything aproximating a mock draft for that league. Defeniitly upped the coverage of auction leagues this year. Bush 68 and MJD 42. I would take MJD and 26 bucks any day over Bush.
kingfish247
Thanks DMD - man that looks like it was a tough go. Indeed. For the price of CJ and since it's a PPR, I would've liked to have Branch/Coles to team with AJ. Without seeing the other teams, it seems you'll have an advantage at RBs... especially over those that spent 60+ for one starter.

Sturphy
I dunno bout yer TE's there DMD. Alge is sounding like a problem to me this year (injury, no Vick, who are Petrino's past TE studs?, etc), and David Martin may lose his job. The Courtney Anderson signing is not good news on the Martin front. Plus, as a Packer fan, I can assure you Martin will disappoint. That's just what jumped out at me. I haven't run many auction drafts, so maybe I'm missing something. Edited August 9, 2007 by Sturphy

I haven't run many auction drafts, so maybe I'm missing something. TE's went at the end and I missed out on several by a dollar or two But TE's do not score that much in this league and I wasn't going to worry about it too much. When I got Crumpler, I was happy to only have to spend $3 on him and Martin was just a throw-in backup. Martin is marginally interesting going into a Cam Cameron offense though I would agree with you that he's certainly never been anything special so far. I actually wanted to grab Zach Miller from OAK but could not find his name when my time came. I think I will swap Martin out for Miller in week one. The Holy Roller
I'm in a 16 team auction with $175. Yours is the first auction even close to size/money. Thanks for the info. And I agree with your comments that with that many owners and that much money it is very difficult to get a solid at all positions team. I like what you did a lot. And agree with the Kitna thought. BeeR
uh yeah $3 for a superior TE in a $250 league is dirt cheap. And I kinda like Martin as a sleeper/project. What I don't get is how/why QBs went so cheap-? Pretty good team all things considered I think, and altho I have no faith at all in R Brown, you have some depth at RB that I bet others don't have. And $98 for LT is high. So was the guy who won him I think.

Surprised me that Cedric Benson went so low compared to Addai and Bush. Cedric could be a nice value this year because I think he has great upside at that price. I like the Sidney Rice pick. I think he is going to get a chance to be a starter in Minnesota (not that their passing game is going to be anything exciting). I am in a similar league (but its 12 teams and keeper legaue, so most of the top RBs are kept). My dilemma is whether or not to keep Brady or Kitna (Brady I need to pay $26 for, Kitna $9). I have LJ and FWP so the only place the extra money helps me is to either get a 2nd top 5 WR (rather than a top 15) or maybe do a little better than MBIII with my 3rd RB spot (I can keep him for $17 which about what he will go for at my auction). If I had an extra $15 I could maybe get Marshawn Lynch (but given the scarcity at RB he likely will go higher than that). Since the extra bucks wont really guarantee me anything, I think Brady is the better play and is money well spent (especially since we lose -2 for INTs in my league).
