Jeff Weaver Trade

It's hard to follow baseball when you're a Tigers fan. Oakland made out on this trade. I think the Tiggers could have gotten a lot more for Dream Weaver. You don't trade your ace for peanuts.

Let's see, the Tigers gave up one of the best young starters in the game for:

* 24-year-old first baseman, batting .258 with 3 HRs this season

* Right-handed pitching prospect

* "Player to be Named Later"

the tigers are so bad that not only were they actually dumb enough to WANT denny neagle (who's been about the worst starter in the NL this year) and his $10 million salary....but neagle exercised his no-trade clause 'cause the tigers are too lousy even for HIM. dude would rather hang around and continue getting knocked all over coors field than go to detroit!

Carlos Pena was considered one of the top prospects in all of baseball coming into this season. He's still young.

The guys ahead of him were Sean Burroughs and Hank Blalock, both who have been busts this year.

. . . and Weaver is just as young, except that he's already capable of dominating a game by himself. Pena could be very good, but he could also bust. Plus, the Tigers have another great first base prospect in Toledo (AAA), and they'll have to bring him up next year, or lose him to the waiver wire.

Basically, The Tigers just traded about the best bird you could possibly want in your hand for three question marks in the bush, and that's always a bad trade in my book. Really, there's just no acceptable reason to trade a pticher who's that good, that young--especially when you have no power in the lineup and a cavernous stadium.
