I expect most of you know that I'm a lefty liberal but crap like that quoted below is enough to enrage anyone. If any of you know skinheads or Hells Angels based in or near Berkeley, ask them to give these scumbags a good kicking. TIA.

BERKELEY, CALIF. - While the City Council here has little -- read, no -- sway over foreign policy and distant wars, local parking is a different matter. And so it was that a parking space directly in front of the recruiting station for the Marine Corps was awarded Tuesday night to an antiwar group in the hope of running the Marines out of town.

The City Council approved a resolution that encourages people to nonviolently "impede, passively or actively," the work of the recruiters. To that end, the council awarded the group, Code Pink, exclusive use of the parking spot for four hours one afternoon each week, for the next six months, to stage its protests.

The council also directed the city attorney to investigate legal means of ousting the recruiting station, calling the Marines "uninvited and unwelcome intruders" in this bastion of liberal politics, the 1960s free speech movement and high-minded nonbinding resolutions.

Tom Bates, the city's mayor and a former Army man himself, said the vote represented his constituents' longstanding -- and frequently vocal -- distaste for current military activity.

"Berkeley has been opposed to the Iraq war since the beginning; it's overwhelmingly unpopular in this community," he said. "And people feel this is an opportunity to express their discontent."

Think Globally, act like an idiot.

My solution to that problem is to not live in Berkeley. We've got affluent, down to earth friends over there. But I don't do well at Berkeley parties because I usually end up unleashing my inner Rumsfeld on someone. Last time it was a guy who was trying to convince me that I should have breast fed my children. Not my wife: *me.*

Between that and the righties picketing funerals, there are a lot of people out there that don't understand that their truly passionate actions can hurt their own cause more than help it.

That is why I refrain from caring about anything.

I find those people at funerals far more damaging than some pinkies in parking lots. Their kids just died. Go away.

There's a big difference between a family of religious-right morans picketing a funeral and the freaking council of a large city containing a major university passing a resolution that allows members of the military to be harassed.

That said, you are absolutely right that extremist stupidity is alive and well on both sides of the political spectrum.

It's a big country. There are a lot of places I avoid and what a few people do at a parking lot in Berkeley don't matter much.

If this is embarassing it's not to all liberals but to just the people involved.

Not true. It's chit like this that provides the ammo for the likes of Fox News to poison people with and it is entirely the fault of the super-liberal cretins on this council. Period.

No "poisoning" is needed on the part of the conservative media, as the Berkeley City Council is providing all of it themselves.
