I'm going to have to side with the Church on this one.

+1. no way it gets to that point if the kid isn't a major disruption. the sad part is, the parents apparently aren't the type you can just go to and say look, this isn't working out, we have to start doing something else with him during church. nah, these people need a restraining order before they'll listen to anyone else.

Two of my closest friends have each had boys with Autism.

We did some research for my son and then gave our Pediatrician a different schedule for receiving all of the same vaccinations. They key is to ask them to split them up instead of giving them all together in one shot. You don't have to decline the vaccinations, just ask them politely to do them one at a time over a period of a few months or so. They will do it, even if reluctantly. Don't take any chances with your children.

I haven't read through the entire post yet, but I will (this is a very important topic to me). I just wanted to get my two cents in.

Very similar story in my world. Close friends with autistic girl, swear that the vaccinations were the cause. The dad is a dentist (and had training as a doctor) a was very reluctant to blame science as the cause...but he did a lot of research and has come to the same conclusion. They are not against vaccines, just against the combining of all of them at one time. All the shots together is just too much for some of these little bodies to take. Pediatricians go by what they are taught. They are told that it is fine, but history will show that just because they say it is okay, doesn't make it so. There is absolutely no harm in breaking up the the shots into individual visits. And don't let them doctors pressure you either. They will sometimes make you feel as though you are not the expert, but like some others have said, it is YOUR child not theirs...take the precautions.

Also, Whooping Cough (Pertusis (sp?)) has become a problem again in Colorado.

Wanna know how it's spread?

By adults!

Adults who haven't had a booster shot in years. Apparently, you've got enough in you to protect you, BUT not enough to prevent you from being a carrier. So, our doc advised us to get updated the next time we see our own doctors.

just food for thought.

The healthcare company i work for is going over all employee medical records and requiring immunizations now for everybody. If you don't have it on record, they draw blood and can tell if you are protected or not. I ended up having to get a Mumps vaccination. At the same time, the nurse told me about the whooping cough. She asked when the last time I had a Tetanus shot was and I couldn't remember. So she suggested if I wanted I could get a DTP or whatever the combo is called shot which includes the Pertussis as a booster. Employer paid, so why not?

Some people believe autism is caused by vaccines — particularly the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine (MMR), as well as vaccines containing thimerosal, a preservative that contains a very small amount of mercury. But extensive studies have shown no link between vaccines and autism.

Good info here. This subject has been looked at over and over and no link between vaccinations and autism has ever been proven.

And don't let them doctors pressure you either. They will sometimes make you feel as though you are not the expert, but like some others have said, it is YOUR child not theirs...take the precautions.

A doctor should never use pressure and intimidation to make a parent get their child vaccinated. If the studies showing no link aren't enough to persuade parents to get vaccinations for their children, then they won't get them. It's that simple.

I, personally do not think that Vaccinations cause autism spectrum disorder. I think that if you already have a genetic marker for autism spectrum disorder, vaccinations may amply the symptoms - not cause it.

Autistic Spectrum Disorders is a new book by Mitzi Waltz, a revised and updated edition of Pervasive Developmental Disorders

The Diagnostic Merry-Go-Round. The diagnosis of ASD is usually a frustrating process of diagnosis by elimination, after a range of specified conditions in the autistic spectrum and related conditions are ruled out.

Getting a Diagnosis: Starting with a Pediatrician. The journey to a diagnosis of ASD can begin in different ways, but for most it starts in a pediatrician's office.

Tips for Daily Family Life. There are a lot of things about raising a child with ASD that teachers, therapists, and doctors don't know much about. Hints from parents about daily life, including tips on haircuts, bathing, clothing, selecting furniture, and safety precautions.

Record Keeping. Some advice on what records to keep, and how.

Stresses on Families. This article shares some problems of families under stress and methods for coping. Problems addressed include withdrawal or overinvolvement by a parent, effect on siblings, isolation, finding the right therapist, separation and divorce, single parents, non-custodial parents, and adoption and foster care.

Parenting: Disciplining a Child with PDD. Whole families are affected by PDDs. This article focuses on discipline issues: how do you respond when "normal" parenting advice may not apply?

Direct and Indirect Financial Support for Families. Some programs are available that may provide you or your family with financial support. Even though the amounts may be small, they may allow you to stretch already strapped resources.

After an IEP is in Place: Educational Issues. Your job in helping your child become educated in school doesn't end once you have an educational plan in place. This article addresses issues such as: monitoring progress, extended school year services, dealing with behavioral dilemmas, suspension and expulsion, 504 plans, taking on the school system, private schools, homeschooling, and transition planning

SLEEP PROBLEMS

1 suggestion... since these kids like predictibility and routine and resist change... DONT START SOMETHING YOU DONT WANT TO HAVE CONTINUE.

SO here are some suggestions to try

Some say its a chemical imbalance with the seritonin levels in their body... many swear by giving their child supplements like Melatonin PLEASE CHECK with your childs dr to find a safe amount if you choose this route

Melatonin for Sleep Disturbances in Children

For me part of the help was a small dosage of Clonidine.... even now at 9 1/2 without medication he can not fall asleep until well after 1 am!

** ALSO NOTE keeping a journal of when your child sleeps and is awake daily behaviors and so forth is a good idea.. sometimes it gives you better knowledge os what is going on when you can look back over the past several days or weeks and start seen a predictable pattern with your child.

Reward chart

Calming Activities like heavy loading or deep pressure massage

Many believe this is sensory related.. I will include some links here

WEIGHTED BLANKETS! This has been the final thing to really help my son and many other kids here! It isnt 100% but for my son its been 98% I never would have believed if someone had said he would sleep through the night from day 1 but he did!

Awesome post Cliaz. My best friend's little girl is autistic. I'm going to forward him these links in case he doesn't know about them.

If he has any questions, PM me and i'll give you my email address [this goes for anyone on the boards]. I deal with the director of Autism research for Kennedy Krieger and have many friends and connections both in the social worker arena and in the ARC program. There are MANY free resources that are fantastic for families who have children with ASD and FX.

I'll do it and I appreciate it. It's such a scary disorder. She's the most precious 4 year old you'll ever see. And she's completely lost in her own world.

:D Well done Cliaz! I'm never surprised about all the good intentions and decency that is shared at the Huddle when life-impacting concerns are brought up.

LordOpie, you responded to my post, and I feel as though I owe you greater insight into my comments. As I stated before, I have very close friends that I have watched raise their daughter with this terrible affliction. We are like a second family to their daughter and therefore I have tried to educate myself on the subject as well. I don't want my last comments to make you panic. All I wanted you to know is that there are a lot of studies that don't show a causl link between the vaccines and Autism, but there are others in the medical field that DO see a causal relationship. It's not that vaccines can directly cause Autism, but like some have said, it might be the trigger if the child is genetically predisposed to it. Because the symptoms start to reveal themselves at the same age that the kids are getting the shots, I can understand the causal diagnosis. I can therefore also see why it can be discredited as the cause. All I know is that some kids have an adverse effect when given so much at one time (i.e. fevers, etc), and that the overall harm of spreading out the vaccines seem to be less than the harm that can potentially be caused by taking the risk of the "all in one" shot.

I am all for getting the vaccines (as is the family I know with the autistic girl). Just give it some thought. You have the time to look into it (being how young she is) but I applaud your foresight into her well being. :D

I was raised to hold doctors and professionals with great esteem. I wonder sometimes if that has blinded me from looking deeper. Having seen and experienced the situation that can come with that blind trust has made me think twice before rushing into acceptance of all that a doctor tells me. Hell, that's why people look for second, third, and forth opinions.

On a side note, I'm trying not to sound like a conspiracy theorist here, but what dollar amount would you put on a class action lawsuit that was able to prove a large percentage of Autism was caused by the pharmaceutical companies and FDA? Thankfully they have a clean track record...
