Casino poker

Huddlers,

I was a fair-weather poker fan during the Chris Moneymaker/Fossilman days. I was a decent student of the game, having read Sklansky's small stakes book.

In those days (say 2003-5), if you exercised the slightest bit of table discipline, you could fairly reliably make some $ in a casino, assuming your luck wasn't total sh!t. People was playing just cuz they saw it on TV.

Poker seems much less popular now and the internet gambling law didn't help.

I may go to AC tomorrow to play some low limit poker in a casino.

So...to finally get to my question. Are casino poker games much tougher now than 2003-5? Will a casual player with a little book knowledge get killed there? Or are there a fair number of gamblers/newbies/fishes/etc. still playing IN CASINOS???

I play in Deadwood on occasion, and I am sure I am considered dead money. Five years ago on a low limit table 2/4 5/10, a guy with a $500 could play all night and make a little, or loose a little, I usually always walked away with more than I sat down with. I was in Deadwood over President's day weekend skiing. I played a little poker one night for about 3 hours. Every hand, everyone was in to the end so you had to have the nuts to stay in, or someone could river you. I played my game and only won two hands in three hours. I got beat on some very good hands. You just can't buy people out or play the game.

Low limit NL is still a fish barrel. Tight, selective aggression and you will be fine assuming the poker gods don't smite you. Tables are not AS juicy as they were, but a lot of the better players still stick to online. In fact, Doyle Brunson in his blog just wrote about how online has killed all of the high stakes action as all of those players play pretty much only online now. Online p[lay has gotten a bit better, the live arena not a whole lot better.

Regarding the popularity of poker, it will be interesting to see if the marketing machine that is ESPN and HArrah's cause a bit of a resurgence with their delayed final table this year of the WSOP Main Event.
