I have a remote keyless fob - no fancy car alarm or nothin (stock Toyota).

I noticed about a week ago that the remote was not consistently working. I changed the battery.

No better.

Diagnosis?

since you already changed the battery...do you have more than one fob? if so, is the other working ok?

Had the same problem with my keyless remote a while back (also a Toyota) and had to have the mechanism in the driver's-side door replaced.

i would try another battery first. I've unknowingly bought near-dead batteries for key-fobs, garage door remotes, etc.

+1 - try another battery. Also, see about cleaning the contacts inside the fob. A pencil eraser works great for this. Don't get too exuberant because you don't want to tear anything up.

ETA - along with pencil eraser some canned air to blow out when you're done.
