TimC
PINELLAS COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- A family of three has been transported to the hospital with carbon monoxide poisoning, after they reportedly used their charcoal grill to heat their home. St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue says crews responded to the 1200 block of 32nd Street N shortly after 12:30 p.m. Sunday. According to paramedics, the family had been using the grill as a heat source for about 12 hours since the power was off to the house. A hazardous materials team measured such high levels of carbon monoxide, that they say the situation could have been lethal. Paramedics treated the occupants: a 77-year-old man, a 72-year-old woman, as well as their 41-year-old daughter. Officials say that the most common symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain and confusion. High levels of inhalation can cause loss of consciousness or even death. St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue warns: never use a charcoal grill or barbecue grill indoors, because it will cause a build-up of carbon monoxide inside your home. Why burn that when you have all those Cubans running around?
The Holy Roller
My brother-in-law is a fire chief in West Palm and he says this is the worst time of year in Florida because all the old people do such stupid things to make heat, such as the above. His most common problem is the oldsters who forget that they actually use their ovens to store things in (like plastic dishware, crackers, canned tuna, etc) and turn the ovens on for heat with said items still inside.
