irish
I just can seem to get a grip when it comes to my cooling system. The system was running but just not cooling the house down. The piping wasn't freezing up. Had someone come out to look and they said that the compressor is shot. What am i looking at in terms of cost replacing it? Is it worth replacing the compressor or getting a whole new unit? What would the cost be for a solid unit? The good part is that my entire system was checked for leaks and I'm leak-free. I just replaced my central AC system about 3-4 weeks ago. New compressor and handler (I'm in FL so there's no furnace/boiler for heat). Nice dual speed Carrier system with a digital thermostat and new Puron lines and a new plenum. Ran about $5300. So far this month saved about $35 on the electric bill compared to the old unit same time last year.

Most likely it's the kenibler pin. Look on the back of your compressor and flip this switch. If that doesn't work, dunno. westvirginia
Just go do the usual. Steal someone else's AC then take credit for fixing it all yourself.

rocknrobn26
Being that the compressor is the most $$$$ part, I'd probably replace the whole outside unit. How old is the current system?
