No More H&R Block Tax Refund Anticipation Loans

While my office offered the RALs, only a handful of clients couldn't be talked out of using them. We highly discouraged the program.

I never offered my private clients the RALs.

BUT - word of mouth was the biggest issue. People, almost exclusively low-income people, saw their friends getting the cash early and started a wild-fire of sorts within their circle.

I'm glad to hear this. I've talked to literally thousands of accountants in firms across the country with my job, and a lot of them have setup little H&R Block style tax businesses where RAL's were a primary part of their revenue. It is a real rip off, regardless of whether or not people have the right to request it. It's eye popping when you see how much money people are willing to give away just to get their refund today as opposed to a few weeks from now. And this year with all of the legislation that is changing, people aren't even going to be able to file their returns until the end of February which only pushes the urgency more.

Please explain. Who exactly was I stereotyping?

My point was if people are willing to waste money paying the rapid refund fee they are also willing to waste money on smokes and casinos.

BP is correct and your stereotype is very narrow. Everyone I know of that has done the rapid refund was immediately on their way to purchase the American dream of a gigantic television and an Xbox, not smokes and casinos.

The absurdity of it is that it only takes 1-2 weeks to get your refund if you e-file. How many people really did these stupid loans anyway?

A friend of mine does it for some extra money and he says it runs like 70%. He works in the poor part of town. There are more of these fly-by-night tax places that spring up in the poor sections of town to take advantage of it IMO. Kinda like the check cashing things.

Your stereotype in every thread about poor people is that the all have iphones, escalades, smoke and chug red bull on the way to a casino. (or combinations of those characteristics.) While it may make you feel warm and fuzzy to stereotype everyone poor as cheating the system, it is intellectually dishonest to paint everyone with that same brush.

I think you have to have a bank account to get your refund that quickly. I'd venture a guess that the majority of people getting a RAL don't have a bank account.

But that's how it actually is in the world. That's why unemployment is so high. The rich are disgusted with how the poor mismanage money.

If only the Government or our leaders in office could show the poor examples on how to spend/keep money.

I know the majority of the clients of the accountant I used to share an office with, that would opt for the rapid refund didn’t seem to have bank accounts to even cash their checks. The accountant had a special account set up at his bank where they could take their checks to be cashed for a 2% or 3% fee, I can’t remember exactly. I know it was the same rate being charged by the local pawn shop that would also cash these checks.

Anyways, the accountant had set up a scholarship fund for nursing students (his daughter is a nurse) that this check cashing fee would be paid into every time one of his clients would cash a check at his bank. He was totally upfront with his clients about the whole thing and would tell them “would you rather help out a nursing student or give it to a pawn shop”. Just about everyone would opt for the nursing fund and by the end of the tax season he had accumulated a nice tidy sum of money for an area nursing student.

wrong - in fact you just did what you are assuming I did.

My point like I said was that people that are using that rapid refund are idiots and thowing money away - if they are rich or poor they are throwing money away - for the most part (in my opinion) smoking and spending money at a casino is throwing your money away.

But since you brought it up and I know you will ignore this but I am willing to bet you $100.00 that more than 50% of poor people have cell phones and that more than 50% of those people have additonal plans like texting or data.

I would also bet that there is a higher % of people who smoke are at the lower ends of the wages scale.

When I walk through casinos around here I don't see a bunch of well dressed well off people.

It does not make me feel warm and fuzzy - it actually pisses me off. Either you are too stupid to realize that this crap happens or maybe you don't care or maybe you think most people are doing things right except for some other reasons than the choices they make they are inherently good.

We will always disagree on this stuff and maybe I should be more like you but I am not sure I really want to be a know it all condascending prik.

You can't put me on ignore again if you would like and I apologize for being a prik here but you always tend to really piss me off and I am sure I do the same back to you

I prefer to invest mine in 1,500 dollar an hour hookers and some class-A Columbian blow.

Disagree with anything I said?

most of it actually. But I afraid that responding to you might result in words too complicated for you to understand. I sure wouldnt want to be condescending . . . .

You have a visceral hatred of poor people because you have a preconceived notion (based on your posts) that somehow poor people are living the high life of public assistance. You seem to think that if a poor person has a cell phone (never mind why they have it) then somehow they have robbed you personally.

Quite often people need assistance due to circumstances beyond their control, and for all you know (but dont want to as your preconceived notions are more confortable and familiar) they could be doing everything they can to get out of their current situations and elevating themselves. But I understand how the overly simplistic idea that all poor people drive escalades, have iphones and chug red bull while smoking at a casino appeals to you. It gives you a target for your hate. It gives you a face to express how you want taxes lower. Never mind how miniscule public aid is as an overall part of the budget that applies to your arguemnet about "waste", or that you have no idea what restrictions may be on public aid, the stereotype is much easier to "believe".

14% is not miniscule.

Oh yeah, and that is if you don't include Medicare, Medicade and CHIP programs which comprise $753 billion of the budget.

Sorry, Link

Are you assuming that 100% of that is somehow "misappropriated"? It was in the context of his self righteous indignation about "waste".

No, you stated that public aid was a miniscule amount of the overall budget. I wasn't talking about any thing being misappropriated, simply pointing out that public assistance is not a miniscule % of the budget.

You used che guevara as an avatar, you work in a country club, and you want to preach to anyone about the poor?

You are a grade A socialist leaning communist.

There are plenty of people here with real world experience dealing with people on gov't assistance. You choose to ignore reality becuase it doesn't fit into your pre-conceived view of the peasants.

Ask Jax about delivering checks to some neighborhoods, ask some here who are teachers and what the kids who get free lunches have. Ask anyone who works in a church what type of people come in with their hands out.

Your view of the world and reality have nothing close to a relationship of any kind.

Actually everything he said, while anecdotal, is verifiable via the search function. I remember every conversation he mentions. But it's far easier to throw verbal hand grenades than to reasearch and LEARN something, huh?
